{"id":424649,"date":"2011-05-16T01:43:51","date_gmt":"2011-05-16T01:43:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/05\/16\/kenya-kibaki-raila-to-discuss-judicial-nominees\/"},"modified":"2011-05-16T01:43:51","modified_gmt":"2011-05-16T01:43:51","slug":"kenya-kibaki-raila-to-discuss-judicial-nominees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/05\/16\/kenya-kibaki-raila-to-discuss-judicial-nominees\/","title":{"rendered":"Kenya: Kibaki, Raila to Discuss Judicial Nominees"},"content":{"rendered":"<div readability=\"44.6180555556\">\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nation.co.ke\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/allafrica.com\/img\/static\/publishers\/minibanners\/nation180.jpg\" alt=\"The Nation (Nairobi)\" title=\"Visit The Nation (Nairobi)\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>15 May 2011<\/p>\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<p>Nairobi \u2014 President Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga are scheduled to meet this week to discuss the nominations to top Judiciary posts.<\/p>\n<p>The principals will further deliberate on the appointment of Director of Public Prosecutions where they will pick one of the three nominees selected on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>It is still unclear if the two leaders will discuss the appointment of an Attorney-General.<\/p>\n<p>The Prime Minister&#8217;s spokesman, Mr Dennis Onyango, confirmed the principals are to meet although the meeting was scheduled before the nominations of CJ and deputy CJ.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Although the meeting was scheduled before the nominations by the Judicial Service Commission, I don&#8217;t think they will fail to discuss the nominations,&#8221; Mr Onyango said by phone.<\/p>\n<p>The Judicial Service Commission nominated Dr Willy Mutunga to be the country&#8217;s next CJ while Ms Nancy Barasa his deputy.<\/p>\n<p>The names will be forwarded by the two principals to Parliament for approval.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the Democratic Party on Sunday welcomed the nomination of Dr Mutunga and Ms Barasa, saying the two had the potential to end impunity in Kenya.<\/p>\n<p>But a Nairobi lawyer, Mr Harrison Kinyanjui, said on Sunday he was going to court to challenge the nominations of Dr Mutunga and Ms Barasa.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The power to appoint the Chief Justice and his deputy are vested with the President and not the JSC,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>And a section of MPs has vowed to throw out the names of nominees for Chief Justice and Deputy when they are brought to Parliament for approval.<\/p>\n<p>Assistant Medical Services minister Samuel Kambi criticised the JSC for &#8220;dictating&#8221; terms. &#8220;It is as if we don&#8217;t have a President any more,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Kuresoi MP Zakayo Cheruiyot and his Chepalungu counterpart Isaac Ruto dismissed the nominees.<\/p>\n<p>The legislators appealed to President Kibaki not to endorse the nomination because they &#8220;suspect a sinister motive in the appointments.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>Reports by Mwakera Mwajefa, Lucas Barasa and Oliver Mathenge<\/em><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<fieldset>\n<legend align=\"center\"><strong>More News on allAfrica.com<\/strong><\/legend>\n<\/fieldset>\n<p>AllAfrica &#8211; All the Time<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>See more here:<br \/>\n<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/allafrica.com\/stories\/201105160026.html\" title=\"Kenya: Kibaki, Raila to Discuss Judicial Nominees\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kenya: Kibaki, Raila to Discuss Judicial Nominees<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> 15 May 2011 Nairobi \u2014 President Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga are scheduled to meet this week to discuss the nominations to top Judiciary posts.
