{"id":424595,"date":"2011-05-16T03:18:58","date_gmt":"2011-05-16T03:18:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/05\/16\/cash-boost-for-university-of-johannesburgs-research-students\/"},"modified":"2011-05-16T03:18:58","modified_gmt":"2011-05-16T03:18:58","slug":"cash-boost-for-university-of-johannesburgs-research-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/05\/16\/cash-boost-for-university-of-johannesburgs-research-students\/","title":{"rendered":"Cash Boost for University of Johannesburg&#8217;s Research Students"},"content":{"rendered":"<div readability=\"43.5376455369\">\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.buanews.gov.za\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BuaNews<\/a> (Tshwane)<\/p>\n<p>15 May 2011<\/p>\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<p>Pretoria \u2014 In a bid to retain skilled black graduates as academics, the University of Johannesburg has received a cash boost from PetroSA to assist historically-disadvantaged learners in the areas of research, innovation and advancement.<\/p>\n<p>The R3 million donation to the university is the continuation of the South Africa&#8217;s national oil company&#8217;s scholarship programme to fund black and female post-graduate candidates in the levels of Masters and PhD studies at the UJ.<\/p>\n<p>The programme started in 2009 and to date, an amount of R9 million has been donated by the oil company, the donation is worth R3 million a year, over three years.<\/p>\n<p>Named the Next Generation Scholars programme, it aims to change the face of postgraduate studies in the country by focusing on the value of research outputs in universities.<\/p>\n<p>PetroSA spokesperson Thabo Mabaso explained that the programme began following a realisation that most research at South African universities is currently being undertaken by mature, mostly male, white academics.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Several universities are already relying on post-retirement contracts with senior researchers to maintain research outputs, the lack of a new generation of scholars is impacting on the future of academic research,&#8221; Mabaso said, adding that the company&#8217;s donation assists with the unearthing of new talented researchers.<\/p>\n<p>Students are selected on grounds of their academic record, their skills for and inclination towards an academic career, and whether their disciplines complement the UJ&#8217;s research and academic niches.<\/p>\n<p>PetroSA&#8217;s Acting President and CEO Nkosemntu Nika said the company is a proud innovator of cutting-edge technology and leaders in its field and therefore encourage the development and nurturing of academic talent.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That is why we are involved in the Next Generation Scholars programme, this will ensure that we build a pool of talented young professionals, mainly from historically-disadvantaged communities and this can only be good for the country,&#8221; said Nika.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<fieldset>\n<legend align=\"center\"><strong>More News on allAfrica.com<\/strong><\/legend>\n<\/fieldset>\n<p>AllAfrica &#8211; All the Time<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>View post:<br \/>\n<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/allafrica.com\/stories\/201105160267.html\" title=\"Cash Boost for University of Johannesburg's Research Students\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cash Boost for University of Johannesburg&#8217;s Research Students<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> BuaNews (Tshwane) 15 May 2011 Pretoria \u2014 In a bid to retain skilled black graduates as academics, the University of Johannesburg has received a cash boost from PetroSA to assist historically-disadvantaged learners in the areas of research, innovation and advancement.
