Nairobi \u2014 With the hunt for Osama bin Laden in the rear view mirror of the American public, our nation is again turning its sights onto the economy and the coming presidential election.<\/p>\n

My prediction is Kenyans will do the same thing. In America, President Obama’s opponents want to focus on the deficit and a stubbornly high unemployment number.<\/p>\n

Too, gasoline prices are rising and may reach $6 a gallon by summer if the Libyan war continues in a stalemate.<\/p>\n

In Kenya, residents are fearing another gas shortage, and another verbal battle with Uganda over a small island in Lake Victoria that has much to do with fishing.<\/p>\n

Economics wins elections. The key lesson in these times is to look at what is working around the world and what is not. There are two basic philosophies in America.<\/p>\n

Conservatives believe that reduced taxes will mean greater investment in the economy, and they believe in coupling those actions with less government intervention.<\/p>\n

Others, on the other hand, believe in spending in these times on infrastructure (highways, bridges, airports, etc.), thinking that their strategy creates jobs and improves the avenues of commerce.A real comparison is underway at the moment. In Great Britain, the conservative government has tightened the country’s belt.<\/p>\n

In Asia, the Chinese have focused on relocating factories to cities in need of jobs, building high-speed rail and modernising their roadways.<\/p>\n

Look at what the Chinese are proposing to do for Kenya’s infrastructure, and you get a very good idea of their growth philosophy. They are building roads and rail lines.<\/p>\n

America and Kenya are democracies like Britain. So we’ll squabble over the best road to take and most likely take a measured approach.<\/p>\n

It will mean, most likely, that American job creation will improve significantly by next June but will not be robust enough to assure re-election of the president.<\/p>\n

But the economy will be strong enough to make Obama difficult to beat. That’s why there are few serious Republican candidates in the field.<\/p>\n

So how will Kenyan voters decide on their candidates in 2012? My suggestion is to look around and decide what candidates are doing the best on these issues:<\/p>\n

Denouncing tribalism and promoting unity.<\/p>\n

Countering climate change. Perhaps the biggest issue facing sub Saharan Africa, the country needs a concerted effort to grow new types of food and protect all sources of fresh water.<\/p>\n

Making peace and confronting terror.<\/p>\n

Forging economic progress. New government policies can assure a growing middle class in Kenya and make sure that every child has access to education.<\/p>\n

Fight the culture of corruption. This is the poison that sucks out the strength of the Kenyan nation.<\/p>\n

Americans and Kenyans share many values. They love family. They love their country.<\/p>\n

And in many ways, they share in the many good things brought to light by President Obama. We must make the right choices in the months to come.<\/p>\n
