ABUJA \u2014 FORMER Military President, Ibrahim Babangida, yesterday, said that with the level of inconsistencies and dual roles politicians were playing in the country, it would take the country another generation to get things right.<\/p>\n

He also stressed that his position on zoning has been vindicated with unfolding political scenario.
Babangida, however, denied media reports that he was interested in taking over from former President Olusegun Obasanjo as Chairman, Board of Trustee, BoT, of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cGeneral IBB does not have any interest in the chairmanship of the PDP Board of Trustees, whether now or in the foreseeable future.\u201d<\/p>\n

Irony of Nigerian politics<\/p>\n

Babangida said it was ironic that Nigerian politicians and those in leadership positions were presently calling for zoning and stressing that it must be respected when same Nigerians and leaders rubbished\u00a0 the move during the call for it by the Mallam Adamu Ciroma led Northern Political Leaders Forum, NPLF, before the presidential primaries of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and the general election.<\/p>\n

Stressing that his position on zoning has not wavered, Babangida added: \u201cAs a product of a multi-ethnic and multi-religious society, with different tribes and tongues, we believe in the efficacy of zoning as a stabilizing instrument of political engagement.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a statement signed by his spokesperson, Prince Kassim Afegbua, the former presidential aspirant on the platform of the PDP stressed that if Nigeria as a country must get there, those who aspire to lead the nation at different levels of government must come out with certain qualities that will portray them as patriotic and nationalistic in nature.<\/p>\n

He stated: \u201cThere will be no hope for the country if those who double_speak are made to preside over certain levels of government in the name of dubious politicking and zoning which they never believed in. The character indices of our leaders must be known at different times and levels. Their elements must be visible and patriotic. Their conduct must be above pecuniary interest.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd above all, their desperation must be checked within the ambit of law. If those who shouted hoax over the issue of zoning in the PDP yesterday, (saying as it were, that the party\u2019s constitution could be jettisoned), are now made to be beneficiaries of zoning in the party today, then we all are doomed as a nation. What manner of supposed leaders are we nurturing? What character of leaders are we building? How do we want the world to perceive us as a people?<\/p>\n

Those who advertise hypocrisy and self_righteous indignation cannot by any stretch of imagination be allowed to occupy positions in the name of zoning.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
