PORT HARCOURT \u2013 THE National Assembly has been urged to take a second look at the Electoral Act with a view to strengthening the democratic process.<\/p>\n

Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof. Attahiru Jega, who spoke, weekend,\u00a0 in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, during the presentation of Certificate of Return to Governor Chibuike Amaechi of the state and those elected for various National and State Houses of Assembly seats, challenged the recipients to come up with the right policies that would promote the common good.<\/p>\n

INEC chairman, who was represented by Mrs Thelma Iremiren, also congratulated winners at the just concluded elections.<\/p>\n

The House of Representatives member-elect, Mr Dakuku Peterside, was not around to receive his certificate. The electoral body explained that the certificate for the state House of Assembly member-elect for Ahoada West was not ready, as same will be issued at a later date.<\/p>\n

Governor Amaechi who thanked the Commission for the election, said politicians in the state would have learnt from the way the elections went, that power truly resides with the people. He added that the only way to retain the peoples confidence was for political office holders to demonstrate the necessary will to act for the common good of all.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur citizens have learnt how to queue up, to vote and protect their votes, meaning that the opportunity to rig election is now eliminated, because the people now decide their leaders, and we must not take them for granted.\u201d<\/p>\n

He thanked God hitch free elections, pointing out,\u00a0 however, that he was not happy that the local government area election, which was around the corner had claimed some lives.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
