AWKA \u2013 SOME ad hoc staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, used in Anambra State in the April general elections, have petitioned the chairman of the commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega, over non-payment of some of their allowances.<\/p>\n

In the petition dated May 13, 2011, and signed by the chairman and secretary of the agitators, Mr. Peter Eziako and Mr. K.C. Onyekaba, they alleged that all efforts made to prevail on the Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, in Anambra State, Professor Chukwuemeka Onukaogu, to pay them were to no avail. They urged the commission\u2019s chairman to use his good office to ensure that they were paid.<\/p>\n

The petition read in part:\u00a0 \u201cThe adhoc staff of INEC in Anambra in the just concluded elections are angry because of non-payment of our training allowances and balance payment of the election work.
\u201cThe appointment letter that was given to us by INEC indicates that after each election, we will be paid N7,000 each. INEC has paid us that of 9th April, which was the National Assembly and that of 16th April, which was the Presidential election.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow, the 26th April gubernatorial and House of Assembly election and that of 2nd April botched National Assembly polls have not been paid till date.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnambra INEC, under the headship of Prof. Chukwuemeka Onukaogu, is owing us N20,000 each from the election work and this is unfair as there is no reason for it.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe, therefore, call on Prof. Jega to cause Anambra State office of INEC to pay us as that is the only way to be credible and fair.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
