Several homes in Yenagoa the Bayelsa State capital have been submerged by flood following a weekend of heavy downpour.<\/p>\n

Though this is just the beginning of the rainy season most homes especially those lying in the low marshy areas of Yenagoa were completely submerged by water.<\/p>\n

Some of the affected families were forced to shun yesterday church services to drain away water trapped in their living rooms.<\/p>\n

This reporter who went round town observed that several buildings around the Yenizue-Gene, Biogbolo, Yenizue-Epie, Amarata, Ekeki, Onopa and Ovom were overtaken by flood.<\/p>\n

In some of the areas, the drainages were completely covered with water to the extent that pedestrians could hardly differentiate between the roads and drainages flowing with water.<\/p>\n

A reporter with Reuters Mr. Tife Owolabi who home was completely over taken by the flood water told our correspondent that he was already making alternative arrangement to move out from the area.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is just the beginning of the rainy season and see what we are passing through, I don\u2019t think we can continue like this. We have to move away from here before the peak of the season,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n

He was not alone in this dilemma as other residents of his estate which is some distance away from the popular Nikton road in the heart of Kpansia were also overwhelmed by the midnight downpour.<\/p>\n

One of the residence who simply gave his name as John said he had to abandon church and engage the services of a mason to build a wall round his apartment to wade off the surging flood in the event of another heavy down pour.<\/p>\n

He blamed the perennial problem on the absence of functional drainage in the neighbourhood adding that the few existing ones in the area had been blocked over the years.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe situation is this bad because most of the drainages have been blocked and do not lead to the natural canals in the capital city,\u201d he lamented.<\/p>\n

He however expressed optimism that the administration of Governor Timipre Sylva would react quickly to the situation as being done on the road leading to the state Police Command.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
