Paul Scholes<\/a> retired at the end of the season.<\/p>\nThe midfielder’s contract expires in the summer and he is yet to agree a new deal with the club.<\/p>\n
And Gill, who also revealed that United have identified their first choice goalkeeper to replace Edwin van der Sar, says the former England international will speak to Sir Alex Ferguson about his future at the end of the season.<\/p>\n
“It wouldn’t surprise us if Paul Scholes retired,” Gill told BBC Radio 5 Live<\/em>.<\/p>\n“We are enjoying the success we are having, so at the end of the season, he will have a conversation with Sir Alex about that.<\/p>\n
“I am sure he will let us know his decision and we will respect it.<\/p>\n
“He has been a brilliant player for many years.<\/p>\n
“It is interesting that while Ryan got his 12th title yesterday, that was Paul’s 10th.<\/p>\n
“It shows what he has achieved for us and what an absolutely fantastic player he has been.”<\/p>\n
United have been linked with several goalkeepers as potential replacements for Van der Sar, and Gill confirmed that a decision has been made over who will be his successor.<\/p>\n
“We know the keeper we want,” said Gill. “We are in a good situation with that and it will progress at the end of the season.<\/p>\n
“It is not as though it is a surprise that Edwin is retiring.<\/p>\n
“We have been associated with all the top goalkeepers in Europe for the last six to 12 months.<\/p>\n
“We have made the decision and I am sure we can get the deal done.”<\/p>\n
Gill also shed some light on Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho potentially being Sir Alex Ferguson’s replacement when the Scot decides to bring his glittering career to a close.<\/p>\n
“I am not going to speculate about what is going to happen,” said Gill.<\/p>\n
“That is in the future and it is wrong to speak about other clubs and their situation.<\/p>\n
“We will discuss that internally and whatever impact that would have if he Mourinho was in the frame many years down the line.”<\/p>\n
Sir Alex has, however, confirmed that he will remain at the helm next season.<\/p>\n
