Sir Alex Ferguson<\/a> has claimed it was \u201cimportant\u201d for Manchester United<\/a> to become the most successful club in English football by winning a 19th top flight title.<\/p>\n

Wayne Rooney converted a 73rd minute penalty to secure a 1-1 draw at Blackburn on Saturday that earned United the point they needed to clinch the Premier League crown this season.<\/p>\n

The championship means the Old Trafford club overtake bitter rivals Liverpool \u2013 who won the last of their 18 titles in 1990 \u2013 in the record books.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat’s the most important thing, being the most successful,\u201d Ferguson said after game.<\/p>\n

\u201cHopefully we will keep it going for a long time. It’s a great achievement.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt feels very good. It was a disappointing game but I’m not particularly bothered about that.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis season has been a funny season. Our away form has not been great and today we drew but we’ve been fantastic at home and that’s what has won us the title.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis thing about knocking Liverpool off their perch \u2013 I don’t know if I actually said that. It’s important to Manchester United to be the best in terms of winning titles. We’ve also got the best FA Cup record, we’ve won League Cups, Champions Leagues and the World Club Cup.”<\/p>\n

Ferguson also insisted it is \u201cnot fair\u201d to suggest that this is not a particularly strong United team \u2013 and he played down talk that winning the title this year might be more significant than the historic treble victory in 1999.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh no, let’s no get carried away,\u201d added the Scot. \u201cThe treble season was something special \u2013 that won’t happen again.<\/p>\n

\u201cI knew we would be knocked out eventually this season and if you want to lose one it’s the FA Cup \u2013 the Premier League and the Champions League are the most important.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt’s not fair to say it’s a bad Manchester United team or a bad league. It’s a hard league to win, there is no doubt about that.<\/p>\n

\u201cAny campaign always has little blips for everyone. Every team is going to have one and we’ve had them ourselves.\u201d<\/p>\n
