Justice Abdul Kafarati of a Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission to appear before it on Monday (May 16) to explain why an order should be made stopping it from issuing a certificate of return in respect of the National Assembly election in the Okigwe North Federal constituency.<\/span><\/p>\n

The judge made the order after listening to John Erameh, counsel to the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Mr. Chikwem Onuoha.<\/span><\/p>\n

The PDP candidate had gone to the court seeking a restraining order on INEC from issuing the said certificate of return to Mr. Matthew Omegara of the Action Congress or to any other person, pending the hearing and determination of the suit on the grounds that the election into Okigwe was declared inconclusive by the Returning Officer and the Imo State Resident Electoral Commissioner.<\/span><\/p>\n

A 21-paragraph affidavit deposed to by Onuoha averred that the election held on April 9, 2011 in all the wards in the three local government areas that make up the Okigwe North Federal Constituency were okay, except Ugiri-Oka and Ibeme wards, where the election was declared inconclusive.<\/span><\/p>\n

He, however, informed the court that the collation officers for Ugiri-Oka and Ibeme, after collating the results of the two wards, absconded with the results and never made a return to the REC for Imo State, Prof. Selina Oko.<\/span><\/p>\n

Onuoha said that he was informed by his agent that Isabela Onyebuchi of the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, Owerri, was the collation officer for Ibeme Ward.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
