{"id":423138,"date":"2011-05-12T20:10:50","date_gmt":"2011-05-12T20:10:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/05\/12\/investors-offer-little-cash-on-treasury-bills\/"},"modified":"2011-05-12T20:10:50","modified_gmt":"2011-05-12T20:10:50","slug":"investors-offer-little-cash-on-treasury-bills","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/05\/12\/investors-offer-little-cash-on-treasury-bills\/","title":{"rendered":"Investors Offer Little Cash On Treasury Bills"},"content":{"rendered":"<div readability=\"36.5547140245\">\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dailynews.co.tz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tanzania Daily News<\/a> (Dar\u00a0es\u00a0Salaam)<\/p>\n<p>Sebastian Mrindoko<\/p>\n<p>12 May 2011<\/p>\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<p>A TOTAL of 133bn\/- remained in the investors&#8217; basket searching for more investment opportunities in the treasury bills which were inadequate, the Bank of Tanzania (BoT) auction summary held on Wednesday indicates.<\/p>\n<p>The government accepted bids worth 71bn\/- against an offer of 100bn\/- implying that majority of investors tendered below the weighted average prices of 93.8\/-.<\/p>\n<p>However, despite decrease in the annual average interest rate to 4.5 from 5.1 per cent recorded in the last treasury bills auction, total amount tendered jumped to 233bn\/- against a government offer of only 100bn\/-.<\/p>\n<p>The bank offered 15bn\/- at 3.1 per cent interest rate for 35 days but the total amount tendered jumped to 34.7bn\/-. For 91 days, the government offered 30bn\/- at 4.1 per cent interest rate but total amount tendered was 59.9bn-.<\/p>\n<p>The government put in the market 30bn\/- at 5 per cent interest rate but the total amount tendered was 56.7bn\/- and for 364 days, 25bn\/- was offered at 6.6 per cent interest rate but the total amount tendered went up to 81.7bn\/-.<\/p>\n<p>Experts attribute the clean nature of the risk free T-bills investments as one of the major factors continuing to pull in investors against other investment opportunities. Also there is a sharp rising of demand for government securities which do not match with the supply.<\/p>\n<p>Risks associated with loans defaulting have been discouraging lending institutions to disburse more funds and instead rush for the risk free short term investments in treasury bills.<\/p>\n<p>There has also been a general consensus among bankers on the difficulties in investing on long term investments because the depositors&#8217; money were of short basis.<\/p>\n<p>It is estimated that over 60 per cent of the investors in Treasury Bills are commercial banks while retail investors account for below 5 per cent.
