Some say political campaigns, or the processes leading up to them, must be honest and true in order to promote fairness and transparency and give the electorates clear choices. Unfortunately, the laws governing these campaigns often say very little or nothing about virtue. This lack, naturally, opens the door for demagoguery to excel and for exaggerations that border on falsehood. The Liberian people may never know where the truth lies between the Presidential Press Corps’ claim that the Liberty Party (LP) declared its support for President Sirleaf and the party’s denial. What they may find out, though, is that gullibility is dangerous in these times of election because demagoguery and exaggeration remain the necessary menaces of electioneering politics. The Analyst, reports.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

The opposition Liberty Party (LP) has sharply reacted to a story carried in the Tuesday edition of this paper, which claimed that it has declared its support for the reelection bid of President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, describing it as “a devilish design transported from Satan’s kingdom”.<\/p>\n

The Analyst based the story on an Executive Mansion press release issued May 6, 2011, under the signature of presidential press secretary Cyrus W. Badio titled, “Ellen Receives Liberty Party’s Support”.<\/p>\n

In a riposte issued yesterday, the LP secretariat said the publication was the work of what it called “political acrobats” who it said would do anything to deceive unsuspecting electorates.<\/p>\n

“Not only might the publication be the work of ‘acrobats’, the secretariat implied, but that also it was the case of a drowning man groping for support, even from insincere individuals.<\/p>\n

It however vowed never to allow itself to be used as a “stamp-pad for the achievement of their inglorious ends”.<\/p>\n

“The article, which shows the hand of Esau but certainly bears the voice of Jacob, imputes that Liberty Party has given endorsement to the presidency of Madam Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf. This is a devilish design transported from Satan’s kingdom,” the LP Secretariat said in its riposte.<\/p>\n

Even though The Analyst based the story on an Executive Mansion release, LP chose to blame its content on the Sirleaf Administration, insisting that it bore sharp resemblance to the\u00a0 biblical story of deception where\u00a0 a man who presented to the Jewish patriarch, Isaac, showed the hand of Esau but bore the voice of Jacob.<\/p>\n

“There are lots more of our citizens who continue to suffer the tricks and artifacts of a regime that thrives on public relations charade by dishing up money to gullible, spineless characters who stand ready to dress it in white robes,” the secretariat said.<\/p>\n

Observers say this allusion to ‘gullible characters’ might be the secretariat’s indirect admission that some of its partisans, former partisans, or mere impostors might have actually pledged their support to the President on behalf of the party.<\/p>\n

Even while the statement might suggestion an indirect admission, the party said, it would not be part of any deception and betrayal.<\/p>\n

“As an institution whose role in national politics remains well-defined, we cannot and will never be a part of the politics of lies, deceits, and cover-ups. This kind of fickle-minded politics is identifiable with the last minutes converts \u2013 the platitude-carrying opposition who define politics in the narrow sense of ‘personal interest’. They are those who are prone to receiving just about anything from the belly of the devil. That is not Liberty Party’s style of politicking,” it said.<\/p>\n

The secretariat did not say how outsiders should regard a situation wherein partisans or some persons claiming to be partisans, out of their own volition or by inducement, raised the banner of other candidates in the name of the Liberty Party. But it contended that the Executive Mansion’s release was a complete make-up.<\/p>\n

“It is a complete hallucination; and indeed, a figment of the imagination of the author of the article, that Liberty Party will, at this critical point in our search for a people-sensitive regime, surrender our guiding philosophy of what a credible government should be, to those who continue to work against the interest of the majority of Liberians,” it said.<\/p>\n

Lest anyone thought LP’s support for the August National Constitution Referendum translate into support for President Sirleaf’s reelection, the secretariat said, the two were unrelated.<\/p>\n

“Liberty Party also states in unequivocal terms that the Alexander Saylee captured in the article as leading a group of “conscious Liberty partisans” to declare support for Madam Sirleaf’s second term bid has since 2005 estranged himself from the party, having lost the legislative race and is only dancing to the drumbeat of what now obtains in today’s politics \u2013 the crowd for pay politics,” the secretariat revealed.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile the LP Secretariat says it expects President Sirleaf to demolish the billboard bearing her portrait, but which bears the name of the Liberty Party.<\/p>\n

The secretariat said that by doing so, the President would demonstrate “the highest sense of statecraft”.<\/p>\n

“Madam Sirleaf is at liberty to receive all of the statements of support that she would solicit, but we also have the right to save our party from being ridiculed, as is being done on the billboard erected opposite her residence with her tacit approval,” the secretariat said.<\/p>\n

Background<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Friday, May 6, 2011 Executive press release in question reported that President Sirleaf welcomed LP’s support for the referendum.<\/p>\n

The release said the President made the comments during a meeting with partisans of the opposition LP where she described the decision of its standard-bearer, Cllr. Charles Brumskine, to support the referendum as both patriotic and nationalistic.<\/p>\n

According to the release, a group believed to be partisans of the Liberty Party had converged at the residence of the President on Friday to pledge their support.<\/p>\n

The group, which called itself “the Conscious Partisans of Liberty Party Montserrado Chapter” reportedly, said it was backing a decision by former coordinators and co-officials of their party by pledging their unwavering support for the President’s second-term bid.<\/p>\n

“You have convincingly demonstrated a sense of commitment to your people.\u00a0 Therefore, Madam President, for keeping the promise, we do pledge to join the 18 officials from our party to support your quest,” the release said, quoting the alleged spokesman of the group, Alexander Saydee.<\/p>\n

President had reportedly thanked the group for the statement and promised that a meeting would be arranged with the leadership of the Unity Party for a formal introduction.<\/p>\n

“Your move is in the interest of transforming the country, so we will work with you in that direction,” the President had reportedly said.<\/p>\n
