Lagos -The Civil Liberty Organisation, CLO, has urged President Goodluck Jonathan to ensure the prosecution of people indicted by the proposed investigative panel on election violence.<\/p>\n

The News Agency of Nigeria,<\/em> NAN, reports that Jonathan approved the setting up of a panel to investigate the election violence in Akwa Ibom and the civil unrest that occurred in some states after the April presidential election.<\/p>\n

The Lagos State Chairman of the CLO, Mr Ehi Omokhuale, told NAN that prosecution of those indicted by the panel was necessary.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat we desire most is for the president to pursue this lofty objective to an acceptable conclusion by making sure that the probe does not end like similar probes that did not make any positive impact.<\/p>\n

\u201cWithout prosecution, the job of the panel will be in vain,\u2019\u2019 the CLO chairman said.<\/p>\n

The panel, to be headed by Sheikh Ahmed Lemu, would unravel the immediate and remote causes of the crises.<\/p>\n

According to a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Femi Olaiyasade, the panel is also to recommend how to prevent a future re-ccurrence.<\/p>\n

The panel is also to ascertain the number of persons who lost their lives or sustained injuries during the violence.<\/p>\n

It will equally identify the extent of loss and damage to means of livelihood, personal and public property.<\/p>\n

The panel is also to investigate the sources of weapons used during the unrest, and recommend how to stop illegal movement of weapons into the country.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
