Picking up nomination forms is one act. Filling them and returning them is another act. Putting these two acts together, it is reasonable to assume that, as at the close of business yesterday, three persons will compete in the July 8-10, 2011 Congress of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).<\/p>\n
The Congress will elect the Party\u2019s 2012 presidential candidate.
Dr. Ekwow Spio-Garbrah managed to beat yesterday\u2019s deadline by picking up the nomination forms from the NDC Headquarters. Earlier in the day, he had, as per the guidelines resigned his position as one of the chairpersons of the NDC, to enable him pick the forms.<\/p>\n
Spio became the third person, after President John Atta Mills and Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings to pick up the forms. All the three are expected to hand in the forms within the next four weeks. The question many Ghanaians in general and political watchers in particular have been asking \u2013 Why did Spio pick up the forms? Let\u2019s consider a few scenarios:<\/p>\n
1. Scenario one: Nana Konadu and Spio-Garbrah belong to the Rawlings faction in the NDC. These are two seasoned politicians who have been there before and are aware that if both of them return their forms, they will be at a disadvantage. They will be splitting up the Rawlings basket of votes and hand an easy victory to President Mills. Or is it possible that Konadu could, before handing over the completed forms, decide to step down and throw the Rawlings support behind Spio?<\/p>\n
2. Scenario Two: Spio has picked the forms but with an eye on the NDC\u2019s 2016 presidential ticket, can he decide to sow some seeds of support? Spio may have decided that it is likely that Konadu could lose the July 2011 NDC Congress in Sunyani. Spio can, a few days to the deadline of submission of forms, decide to step down and throw his weight behind Konadu. This will put him in good stead getting the Rawlingses support for 2016.<\/p>\n
3. Scenario Three: Spio has been talking about President Mills negotiating with the Rawlingses, giving them what they want (e.g. greater control) in exchange with Konadu withdrawing from the July 8-10, 2011 Sunyani Congress. Is it possible that Spio, having picked the forms, would join the Rawlings and demand a negotiated way out, stepping down from the Sunyani Congress?<\/p>\n
If Nana Konadu and Spio-Garbrah return the forms and compete with President Mills in Sunyani, would they be handing victory, rather easily, to the President?<\/p>\n
Are we likely to see major developments involving Konadu, Spio and the July Congress over the next four weeks?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
