13:53 ET<\/span><\/span><\/p>\nSomali Interior Minister Abdi Shakur Sheikh Hassan has been killed in a suicide attack at his home in the capital Mogadishu, officials say.<\/p>\n
The bomber appeared to be a woman, an official told the BBC.<\/p>\n
Militants who control much of Somalia have carried out suicide attacks in recent years.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, two people are said to have been killed in Mogadishu during protests against a deal to extend the terms of the president and parliament.<\/p>\n
Under the deal signed in Uganda on Thursday, their mandates have been extended until June 2012. Elections had been due this year.<\/p>\n
The prime minister is to be sacked and a new one appointed within 30 days.<\/p>\n
Friday saw a second day of demonstrations against the deal, and in support of Prime Minister Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo.<\/p>\n
Witnesses said troops fired on protesters who had gathered outside the hotel where MPs have been meeting, killing two.<\/p>\n
No groups has claimed the bombing in which Sheikh Hassan died. It was the third suicide attack in Mogadishu in less than two weeks.<\/p>\n
Pro-government forces have been gaining ground in the capital.<\/p>\n
African Union troops have seized territory from al-Shabab, the al-Qaeda linked group.<\/p>\n
However, al-Shabab still controls much of southern and central areas of the country.<\/p>\n
Somalia has been racked by constant war for more than 20 years. Its last functioning national government was toppled in 1991.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/p>\n
