{"id":421259,"date":"2011-05-11T08:34:04","date_gmt":"2011-05-11T08:34:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/05\/11\/27-athletes-10-officials-depart-for-athletics-meet-in-botswana\/"},"modified":"2011-05-11T08:34:04","modified_gmt":"2011-05-11T08:34:04","slug":"27-athletes-10-officials-depart-for-athletics-meet-in-botswana","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/05\/11\/27-athletes-10-officials-depart-for-athletics-meet-in-botswana\/","title":{"rendered":"27 athletes, 10 officials depart for athletics meet in Botswana"},"content":{"rendered":"<div readability=\"88\">\n<p>Abuja \u2013 A contingent of\u00a0 27 athletes and 10 officials will represent Nigeria at the 10th African Junior Championships scheduled for Gaborone, Botswana, an official said on Tuesday in Abuja.<\/p>\n<p>The contingent\u2019s Press Officer, Miss Felicia Mammah, said that the team would depart for the South African country on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>The championships, which is being organised by the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA),\u00a0 is expected to feature\u00a0 athletes from more than 40 countries.<\/p>\n<p>The championships is scheduled to begin on Thursday\u00a0 and end on Sunday,\u00a0 with participants expected to depart on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe contingent is made up of a team of 27 athletes, five coaches, one physiotherapist and one Press Officer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe rest officials are one Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) secretariat official and two AFN board members, including the Federation President, Mr Solomon Ogba,\u2019\u2019 Mammah said.<\/p>\n<p>The official, who is an Information Officer with the National Sports Commission (NSC),\u00a0 said all adequate arrangements had been made for a successful outing at the championships by the\u00a0 contingent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am aware of the fact that all necessary arrangements have been adequately made by both the NSC and the AFN for the team to do well in Botswana.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTherefore, the expectations are that the team will return to Nigeria next week with many honours,\u2019\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n<p>Efforts to get the number of events the Nigerian athletes would\u00a0 take part in from the AFN proved abortive as the secretariat staff, including Secretary-General Maria Wophil, could not readily provide the necessary information.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t have the information required right now. Maybe, it will be available later in the day or tomorrow (Wednesday),\u2019\u2019 Wophil told NAN on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>That the championships is a biennial event organised by the CAA with the first edition held in 1994 in Algiers, Algeria.(NAN)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Comments are moderated.
