The Opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) says it is disgusted at what it calls the show of opulence, profligacy, and disregard for public order and time following President Mills\u2019 picking of nomination forms on Thursday May 5, to contest an internal party primary.<\/p>\n
According to the NPP\u2019s Communications Director, Nana Akomea, thousands of NDC supporters with over 60 mass transport buses, had been mobilized to take over the streets of Accra for hours, preventing people from going about their normal activities.<\/p>\n
\u201cAll of these opulence and resultant suffering visited on Accra was endured so President Mills could pick up nomination forms. This is not the first time Professor Mills had picked nomination forms. He picked forms for the 2000, 2004 & 2008 elections. We have all been witnesses to Presidents picking forms, President Rawlings and President Kufour in 1996 and 2004\u201d Nana Akomea said in a statement released on Tuesday May 10.<\/p>\n
He also took a swipe at Government functionaries who abandoned their duties only to sing, dance and pour adulations on the President for hours.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn an obvious synchronization, the public broadcaster Ghana Television was hijacked for hours at a reported cost of GH C 18,000 (C180 million). On none of these occasions was the country subjected to the opulent display and horrible inconvenience in Accra as witnessed last Thursday, 5th May 2011, when the so-called \u2018humble\u2019 President J. E. A. Mills picked forms to contest his party\u2019s flagbearership race. What does this do for the admonition that political leaders have to be moderate in keeping our status as a poor developing country?” he asked.<\/p>\n
According to Nana Akomea, fears of misuse of public funds have been heightened following allegations within the NDC that President Mills and his Campaign team were buying votes towards the forthcoming NDC Presidential primaries.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe anxiety of the country on the possible misuse of public funds and abuse of incumbency at these revelations, have been heightened by the opulence displayed last Thursday.<\/p>\n
Just this morning, 10th May, 2011, we have been told on public radio that an amount of GHc 90 million, (over $60 million) has been earmarked for President Mill\u2019s campaign to be retained as the Presidential Candidate of the NDC.<\/p>\n
This has led to radio presenters christening our President \u2018Atta Cash\u2019. If this is the budget of people entrusted with our public funds, just for an internal party election, then it is a \u2018better Ghana indeed\u2019 Nana Akomea said in a statement.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
