Washington \u2014 Senegal’s Maimouna Faye is a journalist who dreams big for herself and for her country.<\/p>\n

Coordinator of the political desk at Canal Info News, Senegal’s longest-running television station, Faye is best-known as the producer and host of the widely viewed weekly political program Actualit\u00e9s en Profondeur (News in Depth). Headquartered in Dakar, Canal is seen throughout Africa, Europe and the United States via cable and satellite.<\/p>\n

Faye, 33, wants to earn a degree in political science and a doctorate in journalism in the United States. She wants to improve her English. Then she plans to own her own television stations. “I want to be recognized as a journalist at the international level and as an opinion leader,” she said.<\/p>\n

She said 2012 will be an important year for Senegal, because the outcome of “crucial” elections for president and legislators will help determine the country’s future as a democratic nation. Political leaders will have to begin to pass power to a younger generation, she said, as most current leaders are more than 70 years old.<\/p>\n

Faye is inspired by Diatou Badiane, another woman journalist and head of Senegal’s union of information and communication professionals. “She is an example of professionalism and ethics. I like her fighting character,” Faye said. The young journalist wants to be taken seriously in journalism and in society at large. “I try every day to earn the confidence the public has in me,” she said. She hopes to start a movement of “citizen spirit” that encourages people to think about what is good for all parts of society.<\/p>\n

Faye is participating in the Dialogue with Young African Leaders now taking place at U.S. embassies throughout Africa. She was thrilled to attend the 2010 President’s Forum for Young African Leaders in Washington, and especially to visit the headquarters of the Peace Corps, which has had volunteers in Senegal since 1963. At that meeting, Peace Corps Director Aaron Williams distributed a “volunteer action guide” that teaches activists how to be effective advocates for their causes.<\/p>\n

Faye advises men and women entering journalism “to believe in themselves, be persistent, humble, insightful, and always push intellectual and professional limits.”<\/p>\n

“Those are the master words that guide my actions every day.”<\/p>\n
