Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs Judith A. McHale is traveling to South Africa and Senegal May 5-13, 2011, to highlight the important role of young Africans in shaping the future of their continent.<\/p>\n

In South Africa, Under Secretary McHale will meet with students at the African Leadership Academy in Johannesburg and with young entrepreneurs at a business incubator.\u00a0 She will engage with journalists and editors \u2013 including a group of women media leaders from throughout sub-Saharan Africa \u2013 as well as South African social media leaders to promote deepening networks and the exchange of ideas between Africa and the United States.\u00a0 Under Secretary McHale will also take part in an open house at the Mae Jemison U.S. Science Reading Room in Mamelodi and will visit with student groups at the Rosa Parks Library and at the Apartheid Museum in Soweto.\u00a0 In Pretoria, Under Secretary McHale will attend an event with the South African Minister for Higher Education and Training, business CEOs and U.S. educators at the University of South Africa to support job creation and to advance educational partnerships between the United States and South Africa.<\/p>\n

In Dakar, Senegal, Under Secretary McHale will participate in a youth roundtable with alumni from last year\u2019s Young African Leaders Forum to discuss educational exchange as a tool for youth development in Africa.\u00a0 She will also visit a business incubator at the University of Cheikh Anta Diop and participate in \u201cRoad Map to Business Success,\u201d an event at the Senegalese Cultural Center to connect young Senegalese entrepreneurs with established business mentors.<\/p>\n

Under Secretary McHale issued a Department of State DipNote blog to launch her visit, and her staff will provide blog updates throughout the trip.<\/p>\n
