Mr. Drammeh said a delegation from his union went to Senegal and had reached an agreement with the Senegalese transport union for the borders to be opened. He said they both agreed on a memorandum of understanding (MOU) and that the borders will be open today Monday, 9th May, 2011.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Drammeh made this disclosure yesterday at a press conference at the transport union&#8217;s head office.<\/p>\n<p>&#8221; We went to Kerr Ayib last Friday, the 6th May, and held discussions on the issue with our counterparts the following day. We agreed that two members should speak from the Gambian side and two from the Senegalese side,&#8221; said Mr. Drammeh.<\/p>\n<p>He said that at the meeting they told the Senegalese transport union officials that the president of the Gambia Transport, Agriculture, Food and Industrial Workers&#8217; Union has travelled to all the regions in Senegal that border with Gambia to discuss the border closure with a view to finding a solution to the problem.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Drammeh told journalists that the Senegalese transport union officials wanted The Gambia to assure them that there will be no more police harassment of Senegalese registered vehicles on Gambian roads and for an end to the unnecessary delays encountered by these vehicles at the ferry crossing points. He added that other technical issues of concern were also addressed.<\/p>\n<p>He said for them their main interest was for the borders to be opened.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Drammeh said their Senegalese counterparts told them that as it was in the weekend they could not hold a press conference to inform the Senegalese public, but assured them that on Monday the 9th May 2011 the borders will be opened.<\/p>\n<p>He said they have also signed an MOU to avoid a repetition.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Senegalese told us that all along they did not have anyone from the Gambian side to collaborate with. We however assured them that the Gambia Transport Control Association will from henceforth be collaborating with them on issues that concern both of them,&#8221; said Mr. Drammeh.<\/p>\n<p>The President of the Gambia Transport, Agriculture, Food and Industrial Workers&#8217; Union advised the Gambian drivers to observe the traffic rules in Senegal and to report any problems they may have there to the transport union in Senegal who will address it. He said they should ensure that all the necessary documents are in their possession when travelling into Senegal .<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are also advising the travellers to foster the good relations that exist between the peoples of the two countries as we are the same,&#8221; he appealed.<\/p>\n<p>He extended his gratitude to both the Gambian and Senegalese governments, the two transport unions and any such institutions or individuals who made it a matter of concern to work towards the reopening of the border to vehicle traffic.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Drammeh said, &#8220;The police harassment will not be there any more. The problems they were experiencing at the ferry crossing points will be minimized etc, etc&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Responding to questions from journalists, Mr Drammeh admitted that the border closure had brought lot of difficulties to Gambians. &#8220;Workers were redundant and the government was losing revenue on a daily basis. If you go to Karang, you will find up to 50 trucks loaded with goods coming to the Gambia but were halted there. The prices of some basic commodities that have been coming Senegal also started hiking. There was also scarcity of basalt for the construction industry in Gambia and business generally was slowing down as the Gambia relies heavily on the re-export trade. Business was seriously affected by the border closure,&#8221; said the transport union president.<\/p>\n<p>For his part, Mr Ibrahima Garba Cham, the Secretary General of the Gambia National Trade Union Congress, also reiterated the position of the transport union regarding the border closure and stressed that it should not be allowed to repeat itself again as it was really detrimental to the Gambia and Senegal.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<fieldset>\n<legend align=\"center\"><strong>More News on allAfrica.com<\/strong><\/legend>\n<\/fieldset>\n<p>AllAfrica &#8211;
