Tottenham<\/a> 1-0 at Eastlands on Tuesday night.<\/p>\nThe win took Roberto Mancini’s side an unassailable seven points clear of fifth-placed Liverpool to ensure Champions League football – their very publicly stated ambition – next season.<\/p>\n
Yet, if the Eastland’s outfit were to finish third in the league, they would be able to skip the Champions League qualification stage that almost thwarted Spurs’ maiden season in the competition, where they narrowly beat Young Boys of Switzerland.<\/p>\n
“It means the absolute world to finish in the top four. With two games to go we\u2019re going to hunt that third place down,” Joe Hart told Sky Sports<\/em>.<\/p>\n“I couldn\u2019t care less how much the club has spent. We are the players we are paid to go out and give performance and get results.<\/p>\n
“We are a group of players, we are a team and we are delighted with what we got.<\/p>\n
“Hats off to Spurs they\u2019ve done absolutely awesome this season, it\u2019s a shame they haven\u2019t quite made it to the Champions League. They\u2019ve really brought something to it.”<\/p>\n
But the Belgian international was quick to point out that his side still need to progress past the qualifiying stages – should they finish the season in fourth spot.<\/p>\n
“It doesn\u2019t mean we are in the Champions League,” added Kompany.<\/p>\n
“We have seen with Tottenham there are some difficult games. Why not go after Arsenal? We have a feeling they may drop some points and we could get all six.<\/p>\n
Just two points behind Arsenal, Manchester City have two games left to make up the deficit, though they face the somewhat welcome distraction of an FA cup final against Stoke City this weekend first.<\/p>\n
The Blues are hunting their first silverware in 35 years and a trophy would prove a welcome return on the millions of pounds Sheikh Mansour has invested in the side.<\/p>\n
“We need a trophy, and that\u2019s Saturday, we need to give the fans something they can hold,” Hart added.<\/p>\n
The rewards Manchester City will reap from this evening’s encounter will leave them buoyant though, with Kompany confident that they can embark on a winning run.<\/p>\n
“Stoke is going to be a hard game but they are going to face us at our best,” he said.
