The Government’s recent announcement that it was suppressing rising cost of fuel, along with the removal of tariff on some key commodities such as cement, are noteworthy moves with the plight of consumers in mind.<\/p>\n

The rising cost of fuel has already hit some countries with dire consequences. In Uganda, for example, the political opposition has capitalized on escalating fuel costs to spark fears of instability with greater consequences for the economy as a whole. The Ugandan opposition claims that President Yoweri Musevini could use other options, such as reducing the heavy taxes levied on petroleum products to ease the burdens on the poor.<\/p>\n

But President Musevini has not done that. To the contrary, he contends that the rising costs are beyond his control, factors on the international market resulting from the current political upheavals in oil-producing North Africa and the Middle East.<\/p>\n

The irony of the African political opposition is that they promise what they cannot deliver once in charge of state coffers. In many cases, the deal they offer is raw.<\/p>\n

The Government here could have successfully fallen on this international market is responsible argument, contending that it does not have oil wells and cannot therefore bring down prices in a world increasingly governed by the law of the survival of the fittest. It did not do that. It<\/p>\n

opted to lose much needed revenue as means of easing the pains the people would have experienced in a postwar economy that needs everything.<\/p>\n

More than that, the removal of tariff on cement is commendable. This has brought the unit price of a bag of cement tumbling from US$15 per bag, some years ago when available, to now about US8.50, prompting construction spree around the country.<\/p>\n

We believe that the wisdom in this decision is based on the fact that the war ensured the destruction of many buildings and homes not only in Monrovia, but also around the country. This has led to chronic shortages of homes with the attending high costs of rental homes, in many cases far above the earnings of many.<\/p>\n

Another noteworthy move the Government has taken is ending the demand for tax payment records as evidence for indebted state agencies, particularly the ministries, to refuse paying for goods and services rendered. The system encouraged extortion within the relevant government financial sectors, since bribes for processing records were demanded. Moreover, some ministries simply saw this as an excuse not to pay. We believe that in this age and the technology available, there are better and transparent means of determing tax and other revenue payments to the state. If evidence of tax payment or business registration is not demanded before services are sought or goods received, it becomes far less honourable to do so when services are rendered.<\/p>\n

We must congratulate the Government, particularly the President, for embracing the wisdom to make these decisions.<\/p>\n
