{"id":420960,"date":"2011-05-09T17:50:05","date_gmt":"2011-05-09T17:50:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/05\/09\/investigators-find-mass-graves-in-abidjan\/"},"modified":"2011-05-09T17:50:05","modified_gmt":"2011-05-09T17:50:05","slug":"investigators-find-mass-graves-in-abidjan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/05\/09\/investigators-find-mass-graves-in-abidjan\/","title":{"rendered":"Investigators Find Mass Graves in Abidjan"},"content":{"rendered":"<div readability=\"40.2980308675\">\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/apps\/news\/region.asp?Region=AFRICA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/allafrica.com\/img\/static\/publishers\/minibanners\/unnews180.jpg\" alt=\"UN News Service (New\u00a0York)\" title=\"Visit UN News Service (New\u00a0York)\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>9 May 2011<\/p>\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<p>United Nations human rights workers have found the bodies of nearly 70 people, apparently the victims of a militia backing the former Ivorian president Laurent Gbagbo, in a series of graves in a suburb of C\u00f4te d&#8217;Ivoire&#8217;s biggest city, Abidjan.<\/p>\n<p>A team from the UN peacekeeping mission in C\u00f4te d&#8217;Ivoire (UNOCI) uncovered the graves during a visit to the Yopougon neighbourhood, the Office for the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) reported today.<\/p>\n<p>The team found 10 graves containing 68 people, and this included two mass graves &#8211; one with 31 bodies, and another with 21 bodies.<\/p>\n<p>Rupert Colville, a spokesperson for OHCHR in Geneva, said the UN is interviewing the victims&#8217; families and witnesses to the killings to find out exactly what happened. It is not clear whether the victims were civilians or combatants in the recent fighting that engulfed C\u00f4te d&#8217;Ivoire.<\/p>\n<p>The witnesses told UN staff that the killings took place on 12 April, a day after Mr. Gbagbo was captured &#8211; and more than four months after he refused to step down when he lost an internationally recognized election to Alassane Ouattara.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The team is still investigating what went on there,&#8221; Mr. Colville told UN Radio. &#8220;At the moment all we know is that the victims were all, or at least predominantly, male.
