BENIN \u2013 A three-man election petition tribunal, was, yesterday, inaugurated in Edo State, with the Chairman of the tribunal, Justice Paul Elechi, warning politicians and government officials against sending gifts to members of the tribunal. He advised that such gifts should be taken to charity homes.<\/p>\n

Justice Elechi reminded petitioners, defendants, leaders of the political parties and their counsel that they were in the state to do justice to the cases before them.<\/p>\n

He added that they\u00a0 will not tolerate any form of inducement\u00a0 and frivolous applications for adjournment.<\/p>\n

Elechi, who spoke while inaugurating the panel at the\u00a0 state High Court premises in Benin City,\u00a0 said\u00a0 \u201cthe Court of Appeal has sent us and is taking good care of us. We don\u2019t want any form of inducement. If you have such money, you can use it to do some other things or you give to charity.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added that all the petitions would be determined on their merit and further warned that no form of misconduct from the bar, the litigants, political parties, the media and members of the gallery will be tolerated.<\/p>\n

Warning against frivolous applications for adjournment, Justice Elechi pointed out that their assignment was for 180 days, out of which some days had been expended already and that any petition that was not determined within the period will lapse.<\/p>\n

He disclosed that the tribunal had at the moment received a total of six petitions which were filed within the statutory period allowed by the Electoral Act. Other members of the tribunal are Justices Olayinka Biamila and Dije\u00a0 Aboki.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
