The battle for the soul of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is getting fiercer with claims and counter-claims been bandied about. After Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings picked her nomination form and launched her presidential campaign, with an appeal to members of the party to be bold and point out the ills in the administration of the University Professor, all hell broke loose at the Kuku Hill campaign office in Accra.<\/p>\n
Speaker after Speaker did their worse, in their effort at isolating former President Jerry John Rawlings and his wife from the mainstream party.<\/p>\n
The message coming from Kuku Hill was that the party would be bigger and more pronounced without the founder and his wife. Good riddance was the message.<\/p>\n
A leading member of the youth wing of the party, however, insists that the naked attempt to sideline the Rawlingses amounts to political suicide for the NDC.<\/p>\n
Mr. SaCut Amego-Etego insists that under no circumstance would the party retain power in 2012, without the support and active participation of the founder and former President of the Republic.<\/p>\n
SaCut told The Chronicle in Kumasi at the weekend that the party can only reject the founder at its own risk, and that leading members of the party and some government officials were only deluding supporters of the party, into believing that the NDC could survive without ex-President Rawlings.<\/p>\n
‘Look, the people who claim to be supporting the President can go about heaping insults on former President Rawlings and his wife, Nana Konadu, but they would only be creating problems for the poor footsoldiers, because they know very well that JJ is indispensable in the survival of the NDC,’ he stressed.<\/p>\n
According to him, former President Rawlings and his wife are the most credible high profile personalities in the party and the country at the moment, who provide succor for the numerous supporters who are disgruntled and disillusioned at the abysmal performance of the President Mills-led administration.<\/p>\n
He disputed the claim by some government Ministers that President Mills was the most important asset of the NDC, stressing that the President had lost credibility and, therefore, lacks the moral strength to pull supporters of the party along.<\/p>\n
SaCut contends that President Mills had neglected the party’s footsoldiers, who toiled with their blood and sweat to ensure that the party wins the 2008 elections, and that Nana Konadu was the hope of the party.<\/p>\n
He noted that the former President and his wife have stood by the party footsoldiers in times of joy and adversity, and have been their source of encouragement.<\/p>\n
The outspoken party activist argued that apart from neglecting the party footsoldiers, President Mills also caused a great deal of division among the rank and file of the party, a development which was adversely affecting the growth of the NDC.<\/p>\n
He said because President Mills had refused to listen to wise counsel, and rather surrounded himself with people who were bent on victimizing people who fought for the sustenance of the party, the NDC was weakening by the day.<\/p>\n
In spite of the misfortune, the NDC youth activist, who is also the leader of the ‘Foundation for Future Leaders’, said he was confident that the spirit of the party would bounce back for every member to feel at home, when Nana Konadu is elected flag bearer in the July 8 congress.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
