IN THE Midst of a fierce battle between President Atta Mills and former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings for the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearership slot for the 2012 elections, a group backing Dr. Ekwow Spio-Garbrah has called on him to join the race.<\/p>\n
President Mills and Nana Konadu have already picked nomination forms to contest the presidential primaries at Sunyani, Brong Ahafo Region capital from July 8 to10, generating simmering tensions among supporters of both camps.<\/p>\n
It is not clear whether the NDC vice chairperson will be picking forms to join the President and the former first lady in the proverbial Yutong bus journey which desperately needs a good driver before the deadline today, Tuesday May 10, as he had earlier indicated his current preoccupation was to help in unifying the NDC.<\/p>\n
However, a statement issued by 2009 Executives of Tertiary Education Institutions Network (TEIN) of NDC and friends of Dr. Ekwow Spio Garbrah, said the Chief Executive Officer of the London-based Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisation (CTO) should be the consensus candidate for NDC to contest the general elections.<\/p>\n
The statement, signed by Mohammed Ibn Abdullai, president,<\/p>\n
Farouk Mubarak Ali, spokesperson and Bayoung Ibn Mohammed Fatawuu, the secretary for the group, reiterated that Dr. Spio Garbrah was the only person who could avert a possible disunity and bloodbath at or after the Sunyani congress.<\/p>\n
‘We want to state that to avoid too much bloodletting from pitching the camps of former President Rawlings and his wife Nana Konadu Rawlings against Prof. Atta Mills, it may be best to consider a consensus candidate that is close enough to both camps and who the majority of NDC ordinary members can support for 2012,’ the statement added.<\/p>\n
It expressed worry and condemned recent happenings in the NDC, pointing out that there was confusion in the governing party because some of its members had abandoned the core values, principles and philosophy of the party, which included justice, transparency, probity and accountability.<\/p>\n
‘It is therefore shameful that people can no longer question the government on its own core values and principles. The recent happenings go to confirm that our great party has lost focus and direction and are unable to control internal wrangling,’ the group stated.<\/p>\n
It regretted that instead of channeling energies towards NDC opponents and repelling the numerous lies peddled by some folks who were aiming at dividing the party, factions within the party were further deepening the crisis by focusing on insults and character assassination.<\/p>\n
‘Our hearts bleed when all these insults are not directed to our opponents but to the founder and hard working members of the party who have worked tirelessly to bring the party this far,’ the group lamented.<\/p>\n
‘For us, the youth in Upper and Northern regions, Dr. Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, who is intellectually tested both within Ghana and abroad, is a unifier and the man with charisma to attract floating voters and not only core party members,’ it stressed.<\/p>\n
According to the group, Dr. Spio Garbrah understood the ordinary people in NDC and could also deal with important personalities abroad.<\/p>\n
The NDC vice chairperson, the group observed, had lots of experience after working with banks, as a farmer, former teacher, and a former ambassador with international connections.<\/p>\n
DAILY GUIDE had earlier reported that Dr. Spio-Garbrah was likely to pick nominations forms to contest in the party’s upcoming presidential primary, according to a source close to the CTO boss.<\/p>\n
According to the source, Spio was expected to pick forms before the close of nominations today, contrary to earlier indications that he was not interested in the contest.<\/p>\n
He has to resign his position as a vice chairperson before he can contest for the presidential slot.<\/p>\n
