Tottenham have decided to ditch gaffe-prone Heurelho Gomes and have identified Maarten Stekelenburg of Ajax and Manchester City‘s Shay Given as potential replacements.

Spurs manager Harry Redknapp finally lost patience with Gomes after his howler against Chelsea on April 30, when Frank Lampard’s tame effort squirmed through his body in the 2-1 defeat and a goal was awarded even though the whole ball did not cross the line.

It followed hot on the heels of the 30-year-old’s costly errors in both legs of the Champions League quarter-final against Real Madrid and added to an error-strewn season for the former PSV keeper.

Redknapp questioned Gomes’ ability when he initially took over as boss in October 2008 but stuck with the Brazilian after his performances improved dramatically following the arrival of goalkeeping coach Tony Parkes.

Gomes is likely to start against Manchester City on Tuesday night as Redknapp continues to back him publicly, but behind the scenes the wheels are in motion to sign a more reliable No.1 in the summer transfer window.

Tottenham also have Carlo Cudicini, 37, and Croatian goalkeeper Stipe Pletikosa, 32, on their books but Redknapp does not feel either is up to replacing Gomes.

Almeria keeper Diego Alves has been watched a number of times by Spurs scouts and 18-year-old Dinamo Kiev keeper Maksym Koval is considered a star of the future – but Stekelenburg and Given top Redknapp’s wanted list.

Stekelenburg is almost certain to leave Ajax at the end of the season after nine years in the first team and the Netherlands No.1 has been linked with a number of leading European clubs including Manchester United, Juventus and Arsenal.

In-demand Dutchman | Stekelenburg attracting Tottenham interest

His preferred destination would be United and the Red Devils are believed to be ready to turn their attentions to the 28-year-old if they fail in their attempt to sign £17.5 million Atletico Madrid prodigy David De Gea.

Stekelenburg, who was recommended to United boss Sir Alex Ferguson by Edwin van der Sar, feels he needs a new challenge in his career and has no intention of extending his contract, which expires at the end of next season.

Stekelenburg would be available for around £10m and his departure has been eased by the excellent recent form of back-up keeper Kenneth Vermeer while he has been sidelined with a broken thumb.

The Dutchman has spoken of his openness to a move and the scene is set for him to leave the Amsterdam Arena with the club keen to recoup a transfer fee for a player who has been on their books since he was 15.

Tottenham believe Stekelenburg would be interested in a move to White Hart Lane, where he could join fellow Dutchman Rafael van der Vaart, but the Londoners understand that he will not make a decision until after United have signed a new goalkeeper.

Redknapp believes Manchester City stopper Given, who has made just three appearances this season, would provide the easiest quick-fix due to his considerable Premier League experience at Newcastle and Eastlands.

Given, 35, who has previously been a target for Arsenal and Fulham, has been capped 110 times by the Republic of Ireland but lost his place in the City team to Joe Hart at the start of the season and is desperate for a summer move to re-ignite his career.

Spurs made an enquiry for the former Newcastle man in January and will make another approach in the summer, but club bosses fear that City will refuse to sell to a rival, as they did with Craig Bellamy last summer.

Given’s fitness could also be a stumbling block as he has suffered two serious shoulder injuries in the last year and is currently sidelined after undergoing an operation on his right shoulder in February.
