{"id":420150,"date":"2011-05-09T15:34:38","date_gmt":"2011-05-09T15:34:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/05\/09\/us-gives-2bn-for-high-speed-rail\/"},"modified":"2011-05-09T15:34:38","modified_gmt":"2011-05-09T15:34:38","slug":"us-gives-2bn-for-high-speed-rail","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/05\/09\/us-gives-2bn-for-high-speed-rail\/","title":{"rendered":"US gives $2bn for high-speed rail"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><div readability=\"60.0299850075\"><span><span>9 May 2011<\/span> <span>Last updated at<\/span> <span>11:34 ET<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The US government has awarded $2bn (\u00a31.2bn) for high-speed rail in critical corridors after Florida&#8217;s Republican governor declined the funds.<\/p>\n<p>The projects will boost rail services between Washington DC to Boston, as well as in the mid-west and California.<\/p>\n<p>Florida Governor Rick Scott cancelled a high-speed rail project in his state, fearing taxpayers there would have to subsidise the project in the future.<\/p>\n<p>President Barack Obama has made expanding rail services a priority.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These projects will put thousands of Americans to work, save hundreds of thousands of hours for American travellers every year, and boost US manufacturing by investing hundreds of millions of dollars in next-generation, American-made locomotives and rail cars,&#8221; Vice-President Joe Biden said in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dot.gov\/affairs\/2011\/dot5711.html\">statement<\/a> released by the Department of Transportation.<\/p>\n<p>The 22 inter-city rail projects to be funded by the $2bn include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>$795m to upgrade the railroad in the heavily used Northeast Corridor between Washington DC, Philadelphia, New York City and Boston, increasing speeds to 160mph from 135mph in some stretches<\/li>\n<li>$404m to expand high-speed rail between Detroit and Chicago, saving passengers 30 minutes of travel time<\/li>\n<li>$300m to advance a high-speed rail project between Los Angeles and San Francisco<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In March, the Obama administration revoked a $2.4bn grant to Florida that would have developed a high-speed rail link between the cities of Tampa and Orlando, after Mr Scott rejected the money.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Scott said he did not want the cash-strapped state to have to pay for operating costs in the future, although state transportation officials had forecast the rail line would operate at a profit in its first year, 2015.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Go here to read the rest:<br \/>\n<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/go\/rss\/int\/news\/-\/news\/world-us-canada-13337557\" title=\"US gives $2bn for high-speed rail\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">US gives $2bn for high-speed rail<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> 9 May 2011 Last updated at 11:34 ET The US government has awarded $2bn (\u00a31.2bn) for high-speed rail in critical corridors after Florida&#8217;s Republican governor declined the funds.
