An ex-Assemblywoman for the Hemang Electoral area, Madam Afia Donko has declared her intention to contest for the presidency in election 2012, as an independent presidential candidate.<\/strong><\/p>\nMadam Donkor, 55, hails from the Afigya Kwabre District of the Ashanti Region. It is the home district of the former first lady, Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings, who has expressed her desire to manage the affairs of the country.<\/p>\n
Her quest for the presidency comes barely 96 hours after the former first lady had thrown the challenge to contest President Mills for the presidential primaries of the NDC in July.<\/p>\n
Madam Donkor, a farmer, told journalists in Kumasi that thoughtful preparations are underway to officially launch her bid for the 2012 presidency as soon as the Electoral Commission (EC) opens\u00a0nominations for the bid.<\/p>\n
According to her, she takes inspiration from the mark she\u00a0made as\u00a0an assembly woman, providing\u00a0social amenities and\u00a0infrastructure\u00a0like schools,\u00a0water and\u00a0electricity to her\u00a0constituents, and the fact\u00a0that she polled 21,000 votes\u00a0when\u00a0she\u00a0contested\u00a0for the\u00a0Kwabre\u00a0West\u00a0Parliamentary seat\u00a0as\u00a0an independent\u00a0candidate in the\u00a02008 elections against Mr. Emmanuel Kofi Asamoah\u00a0Owusu-Ansah, the sitting MP.<\/p>\n
Madam Akua Donkor noted that Ghana is endowed with natural resources and that her presidency\u00a0would not have to\u00a0rely on donor funding for\u00a0the execution of government programmes and policies.<\/p>\n
She\u00a0 accused Ghanaian leaders of\u00a0 greed\u00a0and insensitivity\u00a0to the plight of Ghanaians,\u00a0and\u00a0 said\u00a0\u00a0 her bid\u00a0 is to\u00a0 stop the looting \u00a0of\u00a0 the country’s\u00a0 natural\u00a0 resources\u00a0at the\u00a0expense of\u00a0the quality life\u00a0 of the people.<\/p>\n
Madam Akua Donkor, who has\u00a0 no\u00a0 formal\u00a0 education, says\u00a0 she\u00a0 would\u00a0\u00a0 channel\u00a0 the proceeds\u00a0 from\u00a0 Gold exploration into\u00a0 promoting\u00a0education and seeking the welfare of\u00a0teachers and\u00a0 students\u00a0at all levels,\u00a0while diamond\u00a0would exclusively go to cater\u00a0for\u00a0workers.<\/p>\n
‘The\u00a0 cocoa we\u00a0 produce\u00a0 would\u00a0 see\u00a0 to the growth\u00a0 of the\u00a0 industry and adequately cater for\u00a0 farmers\u00a0 and all stakeholders, while our timber, manganese, bauxite and the rest of the\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 resources go to the\u00a0 general\u00a0nation\u00a0 building’,\u00a0 she\u00a0 said.<\/p>\n
‘I want to be President to ensure the equitable distribution of resources for proper development of the country,’ she emphasized, whilst pleading, ‘Try me and I will deliver and make\u00a0the difference’.<\/p>\n
The soft spoken presidential aspirant urged the electorate to give her the mandate to champion the interest of women, who constitute the majority of the Ghanaian populace, but have allegedly been sidelined by male politicians.<\/p>\n
‘I am in to give voice to the voiceless women and also show to the whole world that women in Ghana are capable of leading the country for proper development’, she stated.<\/p>\n
She called on Ghanaians, especially, women and the youth to rally behind her bid and promised not to let Ghanaians down, if she is mandated to lead the country.<\/p>\n
The presidential aspirant is concerned about the congestion of\u00a0the\u00a0Kejetia Bus terminal in Kumasi, and\u00a0plans\u00a0to\u00a0provide\u00a0access\u00a0roads\u00a0from her own resources,\u00a0as\u00a0soon as\u00a0permission is\u00a0granted.<\/p>\n
According to her, she\u00a0 is\u00a0 already negotiating\u00a0 with\u00a0 the Kumasi Metropolitan\u00a0 Assembly (KMA)\u00a0 for\u00a0 approval,\u00a0which is\u00a0basically to\u00a0ease\u00a0congestion and\u00a0 avoid\u00a0 loss of lives and\u00a0 property in the\u00a0 event of\u00a0 outbreak of fire\u00a0 at the\u00a0 bus terminal.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
