After many years of neglect, the safety of workers in Ghana is set to receive the needed attention with the impending review of the Factory and Industry Act 328.<\/p>\n
The safety of workers, especially factory hands, has been compromised by many employers in the country.<\/p>\n
There have been instances where workers have even lost their lives as a result of employers’ failure to provide the needed safety measures.<\/p>\n
Both foreign and local employers have toyed with the lives of employers, as workers have been killed by deadly gas explosion at job sites while there have been numerous job-related injuries or diseases.<\/p>\n
Workplace safety is a management responsibility to ensure that all tasks are carried out safely and efficiently in a hazard-free environment.<\/p>\n
In Ghana, workers in factories are exposed to toxins that are extremely harmful to their health while others work without helmets and protective gears.<\/p>\n
Kofi Asamoah, Secretary-General of the Ghana Trades Union Congress, speaking before this year’s Worker’s Day celebration, noted that workplace safety is very important.<\/p>\n
He cited the recent accident at the Western Steel and Forgings Company in Tema, where an industrial explosion killed one person with 14 others sustaining various degrees of injuries.<\/p>\n
Mr. Asamoah called on government, employers and workers to pay attention to occupational safety and health.<\/p>\n
‘It is only when workers are paid well that productivity would be maximized,’ he said, calling on employers to invest in the training of their workers and provide the needed safety.<\/p>\n
He was of the view that government must resource the factories inspectorate and labour department to enable officials discharge their duties as part of the decent work agenda for sustainable socio-economic development.<\/p>\n
Vice President John Dramani, addressing workers during this year’s May Day celebration, which was under theme, ‘Decent Work for Sustainable Economic Development,’ hinted that the Ministry of Employment and Social Welfare has been tasked to review the Factory, Shops and Industry Act 328 to provide occupational safety to all Ghanaian workers.<\/p>\n
The revision and implementation of the law, he said, would compel employers to provide ample safety measures to protect workers as well as empower governmental authorities to punish employers who flout the law.<\/p>\n
Mr. Mahama said the rate at which disasters had affected Ghanaian workers was unacceptable and gave the assurance that the review of Act 328 would provide adequate legal backing to sanction offenders.<\/p>\n
