Deputy Minister of Finance, Hon. Fifi Kwetey, has stated that he has every right to disagree with the founder of the party, ex-President Jerry John Rawlings, and does not intend to forfeit that right.<\/p>\n
Fifi Kwetey insists his recent sharp disagreement with his mentor over Nana Konadu\u2019s presidential ambition has nothing to do with the fact that he is a government appointee, pointing out that he would have supported President Mills even if he had not been offered any appointment in the current administration as a minister.<\/p>\n
\u201cI cannot say that because I don\u2019t have a position, I will keep quiet. Before I was given the position, I disagreed with him (former President Rawlings) when he proposed that Mrs. Betty Mould Iddrisu should be the running mate for the then candidate Mills. I made it clear where I stood, because I believe if you have a father and he is going wrong, you should be able to tell him without fear. When I believe in something, no matter what, I stand by it,\u201d Deputy Minister of Finance reiterated.<\/p>\n
He was commenting on the formal launch of Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings\u2019 presidential campaign. The former First Lady, on Wednesday, May 4, officially launched her bid to contest the NDC\u2019s flagbearership race by declaring that she \u201crepresents the future\u201d of the party.<\/p>\n
But speaking in an interview with Alhassan Suhini on Radio Gold\u2019s newspaper review programme, Fifi Kwetey explained that his support for President Mills should not be misconstrued as a sign of disrespect to the former President.<\/p>\n
\u201cI will back President Mills with no disrespect to the founder of the party. He has told us to be bold and stand by our principles, and that is what I am doing. I call on the supporters of President Atta Mills to come out of their shells and clearly declare their intention to support the government. It\u2019s a positive defiance; the people must be bold to back President Mills without being afraid. However, it does not mean disrespect or disloyalty,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
According to him, unfortunate as it might be for an incumbent President to be contested by a member of his own party, things should be allowed to take \u201ctheir course until the congress so that the delegates will choose for themselves. We didn\u2019t want to get to this level but looking at the way things are going, I think we should allow things to have their course,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
