Asaba –\u00a0 With the scarcity of\u00a0 kerosene in Asaba and its environs,\u00a0 firewood, which was seen as a cheaper alternative, has also\u00a0 become expensive.<\/p>\n

There had been reports of high price of\u00a0 the product\u00a0 across the country due to its\u00a0 unavailability.<\/p>\n

In the Delta capital, a litre of\u00a0 kerosene currently sells at N150 in\u00a0 filling stations while costing\u00a0 between\u00a0 N200 and N500 in the various\u00a0 black market spots\u00a0 in the city.<\/p>\n

But firewood which many residents had resorted to has also witnessed a steady rise in price.<\/p>\n

Investigation revealed that a small bundle of eight pieces of\u00a0 firewood, which was sold at N350 toward the end of\u00a0 2010, currently sells at between N500 and N600.<\/p>\n

The same quantity of firewood, it was gathered, was sold at between N250 and N300 in\u00a0 2010 and at between N150 and N200 in 2009.<\/p>\n

A firewood seller in Asaba, Mrs Nedi Onodu, attributed the increasing price of\u00a0 firewood to the current high demand for it by residents.<\/p>\n

Besides, she explained that the increasing demand for firewood\u00a0 by users had put\u00a0 pressure on the sellers, leading to upsurge in demand from our suppliers.<\/p>\n

She said the bulk of\u00a0 the firewood being sold in Asaba came from neighbouring Onitsha in Anambra, adding that dealers were rationing their stock to meet increasing demand.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven with the reduced quantity that we now get from Onitsha due to the rationing, our suppliers have increase the price of the firewood as demand for it increases,\u2019\u2019 Onodu said.<\/p>\n

She, however, said that the rush for firewood had reduced, adding that the\u00a0 business was still booming.<\/p>\n

Some firewood users in Asaba said\u00a0 that they resorted to it due to the scarcity and\u00a0 high price\u00a0 of\u00a0 kerosene.<\/p>\n

\u201c Now that the price of firewood has also started going up, we have started going to the bush and building construction sites to look for it,\u201d Mrs Fumnanya Ijeuwa, a civil servant, said.<\/p>\n

Two women, who were spotted\u00a0 buying firewood at Issele-Uku, headquarters of Aniocha North Local Government Area, said the purchase may be their last as they\u00a0 would resort to charcoal.<\/p>\n

Mrs Agnes Iwu and the other buyer,\u00a0 who only identified herself as Juliana, said\u00a0 they had discovered that charcoal was cheaper.<\/p>\n

Apart from Asaba and Issele-Uku, the high price of\u00a0 firewood was also noticeable in\u00a0 Agbor, Ogwashi-Uku, Akwukwu-Igbo and other communities in the area. (NAN)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
