BENIN CITY \u2013 THE three police officers who have been in detention since 2009 over the mysterious death of one Miss Amada Uhunmwaeho, a senior staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), in police custody, are in for more troubles, as the High Court in Benin rejected their bail application, citing the gravity of the offence as reason for its action.<\/p>\n

It will be recalled that the police officers Omokhafe Omozemije, Vero Ijeamaka and Olajiga Olufemi, all of Aideyan Police station Benin City, were accused of torturing Miss Uhunmwaeho to death in police custody and as a result have been in detention since 1999\u00a0 due to the delay in prosecuting the matter.<\/p>\n

However, when the court commenced hearing on the case last week, Counsel to the accused filed a bail application, urging the court to grant the trio bail, arguing that the offence was manslaughter and not capital offence, besides the Counsel argued further that after the victim died in police custody, the police doctor exonerated them.<\/p>\n

But Counsel to the deceased family, recalled that the deceased was taken to court and was granted bail, but that the accused persons dragged her into a black maria vehicle and later took her to prison where she was later beaten and she eventually died of pneumonia.\u00a0 He urged the court to consider the severity of punishment and the character of the evidence while considering the bail application.<\/p>\n

In his ruling however, Justice A.N. Erhabor, asserted that \u201c the offences disclosed in the charge is serious carrying a maximum sentence of life imprisonment. I am of the view that since the trial of the accused persons will be heard and determined in this court and for the other reasons earlier stated, bail is hereby refused and rejected\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
