Abuja \u2013 Nigeria\u2019s\u00a0 foreign policy remains unchanged but its implementation will be more pointed and assertive, Foreign Affairs Minister Odein Ajumogobia\u00a0 said\u00a0 on Friday in Abuja.<\/p>\n

Ajumogobia,\u00a0\u00a0 who briefed members of\u00a0 the diplomatic corps on the April general elections,\u00a0 said\u00a0 Nigeria would continue to pursue an independent foreign policy driven by national interest.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe shall vigorously and sensibly pursue a foreign policy that reflects the aspirations of our new Nigeria,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n

The nation\u2019s foreign policy thrusts include\u00a0\u00a0 maintaining regional and international peace as well as\u00a0 security.<\/p>\n

Ajumogobia also said the country would pursue\u00a0 robust multilateral diplomacy\u00a0 which would not be\u00a0 at the expense of\u00a0 its bilateral relations.<\/p>\n

He, however, stressed\u00a0\u00a0 the need for\u00a0 strong partnership with friendly countries while expressing Nigeria\u2019s support for UN reforms.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe support on-going discussions on reforming the UN, in particular the expansion of the Security Council to correct imbalance by which significant regions of the world are either not represented at all, as with Africa,\u00a0 or under-represented\u00a0 as with Asia,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n

On the recent elections, the minister said the polls brought\u00a0 about a change in the nation\u2019s electoral landscape.<\/p>\n

He said with\u00a0 President\u00a0 Goodluck Jonathan\u2019s victory at the polls, he had been given \u201ca pan-Nigeria mandate and he intends to be president to all Nigerians.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cAs far as these elections are concerned, one thing over which there is a substantial consensus is that these were very well conducted and successful elections.<\/p>\n

\u201c Everyone, curiously even\u00a0 the dissenting voices in the main opposition parties,\u00a0 have reaffirmed the effectiveness and integrity of\u00a0 Prof.\u00a0 Attahiru Jega and applauded INEC\u2019s performance and effectiveness, \u2019\u2019 he added.<\/p>\n

He noted that the controversies that trailed the 2007 elections led to the reform of\u00a0 the electoral process which also paved the way for the\u00a0 credible, transparent, free and fair polls.<\/p>\n

The minister also described the role of the\u00a0 international observers as \u201ctruly remarkable.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

Ajumogobia, however , dismissed reports that elections in the country were synonymous with violence.<\/p>\n

\u201c Violence is not an integral part of elections in Nigeria as some critics would like to suggest. Nigeria had conducted violence-free elections in the past,\u00a0 especially in 1979, 1993 and 1999 respectively.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is clear that several of the young persons who took to the streets in some parts of the country after elections generally deemed free and fair, did so not because they have issues with the integrity of these elections, but principally because of their manipulation by disgruntled elements,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n

He expressed government\u2019s commitment to addressing youth employment, restiveness and infrastructure development.<\/p>\n

In his remarks, Dean of\u00a0 the Corps, Amb. Dramane Yameogo,\u00a0 commended Nigeria for conducting credible general\u00a0 elections,\u00a0 noting\u00a0 that the diplomatic corps observed the polls nationwide.<\/p>\n

Yameogo, who described the exercise as an achievement for Africa, said Nigeria\u2019s democracy was a model for other nations.(NAN)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
