The leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) says the Founder of the party lied when he gave the reason for the shift in the congress date to elect the flagbearer, which should have come on last year.<\/p>\n
The Founder of the party claimed recently that the congress might have been postponed from last year, by the leadership of the party, because an opinion poll had indicated that the former first lady would have won the flagbearership if the primary had been held at that time.<\/p>\n
According to General Secretary, Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the party had not taken any decision on the congress date, apart from the scheduled July 8-10, 2011 congress slated for Sunyani, in the Brong Ahafo Region.<\/p>\n
Setting the records straight at the party’s headquarters yesterday when President John Evans Atta Mills arrived to pick his nomination forms, Mr. Asiedu Nketiah said it was palpable falsehood to suggest that the party had conducted an opinion poll and postponed the congress, for fear that President Atta Mills might lose.<\/p>\n
He said at the time that the National Executive Committee (NEC) met, he was not present, and that it was his deputy, Mr. Kofi Adams, who was asked to draft the guidelines for the congress, and that it was erroneous to say that the party had postponed the congress.<\/p>\n
‘It was not true that we postponed the congress. I want to set the record straight to correct the impression created out there. At the time of the meeting, Mr. Kofi Adams, my deputy, was the acting Secretary, and he was asked to draft the guidelines, and so when everything was done, it was a consensus. It was not postponed at all,’ he said.<\/p>\n
‘This is not the first time we set the guidelines for the party. Whatever we have done, we have done it in consultation with the Council of Elders of the party,’ he explained.<\/p>\n
‘I wouldn’t have answered at all, but to the extent that that statement, if it goes unanswered, will dent the integrity of the process we are going through, I deem it my responsibility to respond\u2026 We have never had any occasion to postpone the process we are going through at all,’ he stressed.<\/p>\n
‘In fact, this is the first time in the history of the National Democratic Congress where we have established clear timetables, and we have so far stuck to the timeline, as it is in the timetable,’ Asiedu Nketia, popularly known as General Mosquito, said.<\/p>\n
The party scribe dismissed the allegations that the President Mills’ camp has conducted a survey, and took the opportunity to explain the party’s constitution, which stipulated when and how to elect the presidential candidate.<\/p>\n
As a form of advice, he appealed to all party members to give President Mills the chance to rule this nation, as mandated by the national constitution..<\/p>\n
Mr. Asiedu Nketia, however, wished President Mills well, and entreated the aspirants to conduct their campaigns devoid of mudslinging.<\/p>\n
Mr. Rawlings stated further that at the last survey by the camp of President Mills, it was realised that candidate Konadu was leading the polls with 82%, which put some kind of panic within the camp, and hence pushed the congress ahead to cajole the delegates through the award of contracts among many others. The NDC Founder argued that the party, after deciding on the congress for March this year, again, pushed it to July, to enable President Mills’ team to take advantage of the situation. He alleged that the Presidency had been bribing the delegates, which he underscored, was an affront to the core principles of the formation of the NDC.<\/p>\n
But, Asiedu Nketia debunked the allegation, and stressed on truth and integrity as the principle that has been the cornerstone of the operations of the NDC.<\/p>\n
After picking his form, President Mill was appreciative of the massive support he received, and pledged to lead the party to victory in 2012.<\/p>\n
According to him, winning the primaries, of which he was confident, was not the major task but rather the 2012 elections.<\/p>\n
To him, when his mandate was renewed, he would not disappoint Ghanaians, and that he would continue to build structures for the nation, and appealed to all and sundry to be cooperative with each other.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
