THE NEW Patriotic Party (NPP) has been cautioned against complacency after successful primaries across the country, because going to Congress early is not an excuse for\u00a0\u00a0 relaxation.<\/p>\n
Bekwai NPP constituency chairman, Mr. Patrick Adu-Gyamfi’s admonition comes on realization that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) should not be underrated in spite of lapses in governance.<\/p>\n
According to the chairman, the ruling NDC is one solid party and firmly on the ground even if it has its own internal bickering to contend with.<\/p>\n
Mr. Adu-Gyamfi noted that once the primaries are over, the most important thing is for the\u00a0\u00a0 various Parliamentary candidates to do a lot more than before, if the party (NPP) has to win power at the 2012 elections.<\/p>\n
He said it was\u00a0 incumbent on parliamentarians to start working\u00a0 with\u00a0 chiefs\u00a0 (traditional rulers) by\u00a0 educating them on\u00a0 the\u00a0 policies\u00a0 and programmes of the NPP,\u00a0and why the\u00a0electorate should \u00a0 consider\u00a0 returning the party to power.<\/p>\n
The party chairman urged\u00a0all sitting parliamentarians and parliamentarians-elect to work hard towards a massive win by telling the\u00a0story of NPP social interventions.<\/p>\n
Chairman Adu-Gyamfi challenged each parliamentary candidate to take it upon himself to\u00a0\u00a0 proclaim some of the social interventions of the NPP under the Kufuor\u00a0administration,\u00a0and\u00a0sell\u00a0the party to\u00a0the electorate in\u00a0their\u00a0campaign trails,\u00a0which he\u00a0said must be locally based as\u00a0a way of\u00a0reminding\u00a0them of their obligation towards the NPP.<\/p>\n
These, he mentioned, as\u00a0the Health Insurance scheme, Metro Mass Transit with free bus riding for school children, Housing scheme for farmers and workers and the establishment of a Housing Bank, Youth in Agriculture \u00a0and Aforestation \/Re-aforestation\/Tonga system of \u00a0inter crop trees with food crops.<\/p>\n
The Constituency chairman also pointed to the Revamping of Distressed industries\/ Merger of Ghana International Airline and payment of debt over-hang of $160 million, Mass spraying of Cocoa, payment of bonus and increase in producer price to 71% of FOB price from 41%.<\/p>\n
He also mentioned\u00a0 the Capitation Grant and Pilot School Feeding Programme that has increased basic schools enrolment above 16%, and the absorption of ancillary secondary school fees of \u00a2179,000 per term per student since 2001.<\/p>\n
Other social interventions\u00a0by the NPP\u00a0government,\u00a0which\u00a0the\u00a0electorate should\u00a0be reminded of, according to Chairman Adu-Gyamfi, is\u00a0the Enhanced salary of Teacher-Graduates from Superintendent (L 12) to Principal Superintendent (L 14) and Post-Secondary from Level 8 to 10, making a Senior Superintendent teacher whose salary as at 31st December 2000 was \u00a2410,000 and could buy only 11 bags of cement earned about \u00a22,400,000 and could buy at least 38 bags of cement as at March, 2006.<\/p>\n
Among the\u00a0good\u00a0policies of the NPP\u00a0government\u00a0as Chairman Adu-Gyamfi\u00a0enumerated,\u00a0 include\u00a0 the implementation of Venture Capital Fund and abolition of the Banks Secondary Reserves, Progressive reduction of the Corporate tax from 35%\u00a0 in 2000 to 25% in 2006, replacement of the CAP 30 Pension Scheme with a comprehensive ‘three tier’ compulsory and voluntary savings non taxable schemes, creation of the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs and the establishment of Women \u00a0Development Fund with its attendant\u00a0 benefits, Mechanization of Agriculture, Co-operative Hire Purchase of Tractor and Equipment Scheme including expansion of irrigation schemes and the\u00a0 creation of Ministry of Fisheries and development of Aquaculture in all parts of the country.<\/p>\n
Chairman\u00a0Adu-Gyamfi\u00a0also said\u00a0the NPP\u00a0government upgraded one Senior High School as a Model\u00a0school in every district and built over 4,000 schools, with teachers bungalows\/ furniture throughout Ghana, and went to\u00a0the extend of\u00a0supplying text books and supplementary readers to all basic schools.<\/p>\n
Chairman Adu-Gyamfi\u00a0also lauded\u00a0the\u00a0extension of\u00a0information Communication Technology to all districts,\u00a0the Subsidy on utility prices since 2003, especially water and electricity, Development of Millennium Challenge\u00a0Account (MCA-$547 million) programmes in 23 selected districts in 6 regions in Ghana, and the\u00a0Introduction in 2008 of Livelihood Against Poverty (LEAP) in over\u00a067 districts\u00a0to cater\u00a0for\u00a0those below poverty line, and have\u00a0no means\u00a0of economic sustenance.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
