President John Evans Atta Mills has declared before teeming supporters and sympathisers of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) that he would overwhelmingly win the party\u2019s flag-bearer contest in July and the 2012 presidential election.<\/p>\n
Making the declaration at a news conference in Accra, which turned out to be a veritable rally after he had picked nomination forms at the NDC Headquarters to contest the NDC flagbearership, the President said, \u201cMy brothers and sisters, you need not worry because l am going to win by a landslide. Victory is going to be mine in the primary and victory is going to be ours in the 2012 elections.\u201d<\/p>\n
He pledged not to engage in mudslinging, indulge in any falsity or fabrication and disrespect any one.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe contest is not about who can insult; the contest is about the one who has the ability to improve the living standards of our people,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n
Spotting a white top over a brown pair of trousers, the President, who was all smiles, raised a white handkerchief to acknowledge cheers from the many supporters who had massed up at his campaign headquarters at Kuku Hill, Osu in Accra.<\/p>\n
The milling and enthusiastic crowd created a hectic time for the police and other security officials.<\/p>\n
President Mills was led to the rally grounds by six NDC supporters who rode on horses, to the admiration of the Vice-President, Mr John Dramani Mahama, and the hundreds of party faithful and admirers who waited in the scorching sun for well over one and a half hours.<\/p>\n
Yesterday’s rally also served as a platform for the former presidential candidate of the National Reform Party (NRP), Mr Goosie Tanoh, and other leading NRP members who parted ways with the NDC after the Swedru Declaration to announce their return to the NDC.<\/p>\n
By picking the nomination forms, President Mills became the first person to stake his claim to the NDC\u2019s flagbearership for the fourth consecutive time.<\/p>\n
He is contesting for the second time to become the flag bearer when the NDC is managing the affairs of the country. He did so when the party was in power in 2000.<\/p>\n
He contested the 2004 and 2008 elections when the NDC was in opposition. While he lost the 2004 election to former President John Agyekum Kufuor, he defeated the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, at the 2008 polls.<\/p>\n
However, the NDC is making history in the Fourth Republic in that it is the first time that a female, in the person of a former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings, is contesting the presidential primary of a political party.<\/p>\n
Addressing the rally, President Mills declared, \u201cOur duty from now on is to build on the successes we have chalked up and improve the lives of our people. I am still committed to the rule of law and I will not plunge the country into disaster or danger.\u201d.<\/p>\n
The President pledged to pursue values and beliefs that could bring Ghanaians together and set examples that could be emulated by all, stressing, \u201cI will strive, at all times, for the truth, even if it sounds unpalatable.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have to protect the legacy that will last for many years,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He said power was not given to the NDC on a silver platter but through hard work and vigilance and urged supporters to have faith, as there was light at the end of the tunnel.<\/p>\n
President Mills thanked all those who contributed to his election as the presidential candidate of the NDC in 2006 and also supported him to win the election in 2008 for the confidence reposed in him.<\/p>\n
\u201cI wish to express my sincere heartfelt gratitude to party faithful, officials and particularly foot soldiers whose fight and resilience have brought us this far,\u201d he stressed.<\/p>\n
The Vice-President, who chaired the function, underscored the need for all Ghanaians to rally behind President Mills to enable him to work towards improving the lives of the people, saying, \u201cGod has been good to the NDC, against all odds making us win the 2008 elections. God will help us to win again.\u201d<\/p>\n
