{"id":418636,"date":"2011-05-06T11:09:55","date_gmt":"2011-05-06T11:09:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/05\/06\/stocks-investors-await-jobs-report\/"},"modified":"2011-05-06T11:09:55","modified_gmt":"2011-05-06T11:09:55","slug":"stocks-investors-await-jobs-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/05\/06\/stocks-investors-await-jobs-report\/","title":{"rendered":"Stocks: Investors await jobs report"},"content":{"rendered":"<div readability=\"101.662319835\">\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/data\/premarket\/index.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.cdn.turner.com\/money\/2011\/05\/06\/markets\/premarkets\/sandp%20futures%20top%20may%206%20622am.png\" alt=\"premarkets\" width=\"475\" height=\"280\" border=\"0\" class=\"cnnstoryImageFull\" \/><\/a><span><strong>Click on chart for more premarket data.<\/strong><\/span><span id=\"fb-recommend\"\/> <span>By CNNMoney staff<\/span><span>May 6, 2011: 7:09 AM ET<\/span><\/p>\n<p>NEW YORK\u00a0(CNNMoney) &#8212; U.S. investors await the monthly jobs report Friday, with stock futures indicating a higher open after the report&#8217;s release.<\/p>\n<p>Dow Jones industrial average (<a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/quote\/quote.html?symb=INDU&#038;source=story_quote_link\">INDU<\/a>), S&#038;P 500 (<a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/quote\/quote.html?symb=SPX&#038;source=story_quote_link\">SPX<\/a>) and Nasdaq (<a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/quote\/quote.html?symb=COMP&#038;source=story_quote_link\">COMP<\/a>) futures rose between 0.2% and 0.3%, but the 8:30 a.m. ET monthly jobs report is likely to affect those gains. Futures measure current index values against perceived future performance.<\/p>\n<p>Friday marks the one-year anniversary of Wall Street&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2011\/05\/06\/markets\/flash_crash\/index.htm\">&#8216;flash crash&#8217;<\/a> that sent the Dow industrials plunging nearly 1,000 points in less than 20 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, a <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2011\/05\/05\/markets\/markets_newyork\/index.htm\">sell-off on Wall Street<\/a> accelerated late in the day, as oil prices plunged and other commodities sharply declined.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/data\/commodities\/index.html\">Oil and silver<\/a> continue to slide Friday morning.<\/p>\n<p>Just a week ago, silver prices were within spitting distance of breaching $50 an ounce. Friday, silver futures for July delivery dropped $1.34 to $34.90 an ounce.<\/p>\n<p>Oil for June delivery slipped $2.20 to $97.60 a barrel, after plunging 8.6% to close <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2011\/05\/05\/markets\/oil_prices\/index.htm\">below $100 a barrel<\/a> Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>After 44 straight increases, the national average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline decreased Friday, according to AAA.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/news\/economy\/index.html\"><strong>Economy:<\/strong><\/a> All eyes will be on the Labor Department&#8217;s jobs report, due at 8:30 a.m. ET.<\/p>\n<p>The report is expected to show employers added 185,000 jobs in April, according to economists surveyed by CNNMoney. The unemployment rate is forecast to remain unchanged at 8.8%.<\/p>\n<p>In March, 216,000 jobs were added to payrolls, so the expectation would mean a slight slowdown in the pace of job growth.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/news\/companies\/\"><strong>Companies<\/strong><\/a>: Newspaper publisher Washington Post Co. (<a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/quote\/quote.html?symb=WPO&#038;source=story_quote_link\">WPO<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/magazines\/fortune\/fortune500\/2011\/snapshots\/620.html?source=story_f500_link\">Fortune 500<\/a>) will release its quarterly results, along with utility and natural gas company Constellation Energy (<a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/quote\/quote.html?symb=CEG&#038;source=story_quote_link\">CEG<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/magazines\/fortune\/fortune500\/2011\/snapshots\/2055.html?source=story_f500_link\">Fortune 500<\/a>) Friday.<\/p>\n<p>After the closing bell Thursday, insurer giant AIG (<a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/quote\/quote.html?symb=AIG&#038;source=story_quote_link\">AIG<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/magazines\/fortune\/fortune500\/2011\/snapshots\/2469.html?source=story_f500_link\">Fortune 500<\/a>) reported a <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2011\/05\/05\/news\/companies\/aig\/index.htm\">loss from continuing operations of $1.41 per share<\/a> for the first three months of the year, compared to a profit of $2.16 per share over the same period a year ago.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/data\/world_markets\/europe\/\"><strong>World markets:<\/strong><\/a> European stocks were mixed in morning trading. Britain&#8217;s FTSE 100 slid 0.2%, while the DAX in Germany added 0.6% and France&#8217;s CAC 40 rose 0.4%.<\/p>\n<p>Asian markets ended the session lower across the board.
