Lying coach Mariano Barreto says he not interested in coaching Ghana in future because the country is too \u2018problematic\u2019.<\/strong><\/p>\nThe Portuguese trainer, who would rather not coach the top-rated Black Stars, is rather dying to coach minnows India.<\/p>\n
Even though the Portuguese rubbished Ghana in an interview with an Indian newspaper, he was among coaches who applied late last year to coach the Black Stars.<\/p>\n
Barreto lied to the Ghana FA and left under bizarre circumstances in 2005 without seeing through his contract which resulted in a Fifa fine against him.<\/p>\n
Having fallen on hard times after his team in Bahrain, Al Ahli, were crushed because of their involvement in opposition protests, Barreto claims he prefers to coach in India than in Africa.<\/p>\n
\u201cI would never coach in Africa again. It\u2019s too problematic,\u201d he says matter-of-factly.<\/p>\n
Taking on \u201cinteresting challenges\u201d is not alien to Barreto, who has been the coach of the Ghana national team in the past.<\/p>\n
His Ghana assignment was tricky but he nevertheless led the African team to the Olympic Games football tournament in Athens 2004.<\/p>\n
He has offers from Saudi Arabia, an unnamed Portuguese Super League club and could so easily go back to Russia too where he made a name for himself, but the vacancy at the Indian national team remains of particular interest.<\/p>\n
\u201cIndia provides for an interesting challenge. If the AIFF feels I can be of help, I would be more than willing,\u201d said Barreto.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere is no magic formula for Indian football. Don\u2019t tell me about the size and physique of footballers, because I believe its not a deterrent when some of the world\u2019s most gifted players are neither tall nor well-built. India needs to have a strong base,\u201d said Barreto.<\/p>\n
The globe-trotting coach is currently incharge of Bahrain Premier League champions Al Ahli, but with three of his players jailed for anti-government protests, two clubs pulling out and the league suspended, Barreto chose to walk out of his club and enjoy the serenity of Goa before proceeding to his hometown in Portugal.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere was no point in continuing there. This was not what I had gone to Bahrain for,\u201d said Barreto, at ease with himself at a city hotel early on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Barreto, 54, who was born in Ribandar before migrating to Portugal when he was still only three years old, has worked at several clubs in Portugal and abroad including Sporting Clube de Portugal \u2013 where he worked with the likes of Jose Mourinho, Bobby Robson and Luis Figo \u2013 FC Alverca, Bayer Leverkusen and FC Lokomotiv Moscow and can pick and choose his clubs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/p>\n
