After years fronting Most Haunted, Yvette Fielding has had scores of brushes with things that go bump in the night.<\/p>\n

Yet her first ghostly encounter was much closer to home \u2014 ten years ago in the picturesque Cheshire cottage she shared with her husband Karl.<\/p>\n

Yvette had fallen in love with the cottage, although Karl had reservations. \u2018He agreed to buy it,\u2019 she says. \u2018But he felt that there was this oppressive presence.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n

Once they\u2019d moved in, that presence manifested itself physically. \u2018There were lots of unexplained phenomena, particularly when Karl was away. I would hear furniture moving and lightbulbs would blow on a weekly basis.<\/p>\n

\u2018One evening while I was in the living room I heard the cupboard doors slamming from the kitchen,\u2019 she recalls. \u2018When I finally looked there was nothing there, but I knew what I\u2019d heard. The whole thing was incredibly unsettling. It was over a period of time and it was real.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

The phenomena culminated in a terrifying night-time encounter. \u2018One night when Karl was away in London I woke up and saw the spectre of an old woman lying next to me wrapped in a shawl, staring right at me.<\/p>\n

\u2018It only lasted a few seconds, but I saw it as clear as day. I leapt out of bed and screamed the place down before calling Karl and ordering him to come home.\u2019<\/p>\n

Yvette insisted on calling in an exorcist. \u2018He told me a family had lived there, including an older woman. He said she hated men, as her husband was a drinker who used to beat her,\u2019 Yvette explains.<\/p>\n

\u2018A few months later we were digging up the garden and found a well of old drink bottles.\u2019<\/p>\n

The experience would prompt her interest in the paranormal and the story is relived in a new TV series in which other celebrities recall their own encounters with the unexplained.<\/p>\n

From racing commentator John McCririck and former politicians Edwina Currie and Lembit Opik to Toyah Wilcox, they are unusual bedfellows, united by their personal experiences of ghostly goings on.<\/p>\n

Of course, none of this is likely to convince the sceptics \u2014 although Yvette is ready for them. \u2018There are always people who are going to be cynical about this sort of thing,\u2019 she says. \u2018But a lot of people are absolute believers \u2014 and personally I think they\u2019re the more sensible.\u2019<\/p>\n
