{"id":418219,"date":"2011-05-05T21:23:56","date_gmt":"2011-05-05T21:23:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/05\/05\/seven-stanford-charges-abandoned\/"},"modified":"2011-05-05T21:23:56","modified_gmt":"2011-05-05T21:23:56","slug":"seven-stanford-charges-abandoned","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/05\/05\/seven-stanford-charges-abandoned\/","title":{"rendered":"Seven Stanford charges abandoned"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><div readability=\"48.5504885993\"><span><span>5 May 2011<\/span> <span>Last updated at<\/span> <span>17:23 ET<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>US federal prosecutors have dropped seven of the 21 charges against the Texas financier Allen Stanford.<\/p>\n<p>But Mr Stanford could still face up to 20 years in prison if he is convicted of any of 10 remaining fraud counts.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Stanford &#8211; who rose to prominence promoting Twenty20 cricket in the Caribbean &#8211; is accused of running a $7bn (\u00a34.5bn) Antigua-based Ponzi scheme to defraud investors.<\/p>\n<p>He has pleaded not guilty to fraud, conspiracy and obstruction.<\/p>\n<p>A Ponzi scheme pays returns to investors out of the deposits of other investors.<\/p>\n<p>A US federal judge ruled in January that Mr Stanford was unfit to stand trial.<\/p>\n<p>He is currently in a hospital at the Butner Federal Correctional Complex in North Carolina, being treated for an addiction to anti-anxiety medication that he has developed while in prison.<\/p>\n<p>Four co-defendants from the original indictment have also been removed.
