In a keenly contested software students competition held, Wednesday, at the University of Lagos Akoka,\u00a0 four students from the Federal University of Technology Akure,\u00a0 (FUTA) representing team \u2018Nerds Inc\u2019 whose software work is on Medicare have emerged winners of Imagine Cup Nigeria finals 2011.<\/p>\n

The Microsoft Imagine Cup, the world\u2019s premier student technology competition is focused on finding solutions to real-world issues.<\/p>\n

The competition encourages the world\u2019s most talented software designers, programmers, to tackle, head on, issues related to: hunger relief, poverty, education, disease control, healthcare, the environment and other crucial problems facing our world.<\/p>\n

With this development, the wining team comprising of David Olaniyan, Taiwo Orogbangba, Toluwanmi Kolawole and Alaba Oluwafemi of the Federal University of Technology Akure, (FUTA) are\u00a0 expected to represent Nigeria at the world finals slated to hold this July in New York, the United States of America.<\/p>\n

With no fewer than\u00a0 200 applications\u00a0 received by Microsoft Nigeria, 9 teams were short listed for the Nigeria finals with team Nerds Inc emerging the winner.<\/p>\n

Other teams from different higher institutions across the country\u00a0\u00a0 that contested in the software competition\u00a0 also include Techsolutions, CSCLounge, Computechnic, BrainsMedia, Wings, Click Synergy, Ozone, and Solidified<\/p>\n

While each team was given about 15 minutes to present their software application before a\u00a0 capacity audience, the impartial judges based their decisions\u00a0 on problem definition, solution design and innovation, technical architecture and user experience, business viability and presentation.<\/p>\n

Shortly after the announcement of the result\u00a0 by the judges, the spokesperson of wining\u00a0 team Nerds Inc who will be flying Nigeria flag at the stage this July, Olaniyam David with excitement told IT journalist that it was a dream come true.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will do Nigeria proud at the world stage this summer. We will fly the flag well. We hope to beat other students from other countries that will also\u00a0 be participating. We are very happy to be the winner of this contest. Our software application has the capacity to solve\u00a0 health issue which is one of the toughest challenge in the third world countries. We are grateful to Microsoft for this exposure\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Being their first entry in the competition, with optimism, he told journalists that their team will do everything possible to win at the world finals.<\/p>\n

Earlier in his remarks, the Country Manager, Microsoft Anglophone West Africa Mr Emmanuel Onyeje had inspired the contesting students\u00a0 to show passion in their software application.<\/p>\n

\u201cEverybody is a winner. Today is your first step in changing the world. Show passion in work. Enjoy what you have done. Believe in your work. Imagine Cup is opportunity for next generation. Make your dream a reality\u201d he told the contesting students.<\/p>\n

Now in its ninth year, the Imagine Cup has grown to become the world\u2019s premier student technology competition with more than 325,000 students representing 100 countries participating in last year\u2019s event.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
