DR. MATTHEW Opoku Prempeh\u2019s immense popularity in the Manhyia constituency became manifest Saturday when he recorded a landslide victory in the NPP parliamentary polls held in the area.<\/p>\n
Known in political circles as \u2018Napo,\u2019 the Manhyia MP unleashed a killer blow to his only competitor in the elections, Kwabena Amofa Sarpong who suffered an embarrassing defeat.<\/p>\n
At the end of primaries, Napo comfortably retained his seat with a staggering 509 of the 649 votes cast in an incident-free poll held at Dichemso in Kumasi. Mr. Sarpong on the other hand, only managed a meager 140 of the votes cast and consequently lost his bid of becoming NPP parliamentary candidate for Manhyia in 2012.<\/p>\n
Even before the Electoral Commissioner (EC) could declare the results, the highly expectant delegates were seen singing victory tunes in Napo\u2019s name.<\/p>\n
The jubilation continued until the EC officially declared Dr. Prempeh winner and the spontaneous uproar that greeted his victory nearly shook the entire foundation of the venue.<\/p>\n
In his acceptance speech, Dr. Prempeh urged his supporters and all NPP faithful to put his sweet victory behind them and concentrate on the battle against the NDC in 2012.<\/p>\n
He said this victory is of no importance to him stressing \u201cmy heart\u2019s desire is what we can do to win more votes to help our flag bearer Nana Akufo-Addo win the presidency in 2012.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Manhyia MP implored NPP supporters in the area to embark on a \u2018house-to-house\u2019 campaign immediately to win more \u2018souls\u2019 for their beloved party in the next polls.<\/p>\n
He said the party belonged to the polling station agents and all other grass root members of the NPP so they should embrace the huge task ahead with open arms and contribute to help NPP win the 2012 polls.<\/p>\n
According Napo he has forgiven all those who offended him in the heat of the campaign. He therefore urged his teeming supporters to follow his lead by forgiving all those that might have insulted them during the campaign season, reminding them that the election was a family affair.<\/p>\n
Dr. Prempeh observed that the NPP needs total unity and peace to unseat the NDC and entreated the party faithful to shun all actions that could jeopardize the peaceful atmosphere in the party.<\/p>\n
On his part, Mr. Sarpong who looked a bit dazed following his embarrassing loss, accepted defeat in good faith saying \u201cthe party has voted for what it wants.\u201d<\/p>\n
Struggling to find the right words, a visibly shaken Mr. Sarpong appealed to NPP followers to rally behind Napo to maximize the party\u2019s share of votes in 2012.<\/p>\n
After the event, Dr. Prempeh found himself in trouble as the elated party supporters mobbed him in manner which made it impossible for him to even take a step. The police personnel detailed to provide security had a hectic time before they could subdue the crowd back and free Napo who dashed to his waiting car which took off at top speed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
