Harlequins coach Rob Powell will be back where it all began for him when he takes his team to Tyneside for Friday’s Challenge Cup clash with Gateshead.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Powell played his first game of rugby league back in 1998 when he went to Newcastle University to study history.<\/p>\n

And he enjoyed it so much that it turned into a long-term career move for Sheffield-born Powell.<\/p>\n

“Rugby League was just kicking off up there. I enjoyed it, it’s a good place and I had a good time,” he recalls.<\/p>\n

“There had been activity for quite a while but there was only one team.”<\/p>\n

Powell was so taken with the game that, having gained his degree, he then stayed on in the North East for 18 months to do a masters degree in sport management at Northumbria University, while he coached his old university team.<\/p>\n

“We won the North East Cup, won our local university division and got into the Challenge Cup and managed to win the first round,” he recalls.<\/p>\n

“We had a couple of decent players, including Huddersfield’s Andy Raleigh, who was the year below me.<\/p>\n

“A guy called Rob Jones coached the university team and he is still a development officer in the North East.<\/p>\n

“He was the first person to encourage me to go into coaching and I’m still in touch with him.<\/p>\n

Now Powell returns to the North East with Quins, looking for his team’s first win since 11 March.<\/p>\n\n\n

Harlequins coach Rob Powell<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n

Quins have suffered a nightmare eight-match run without a victory which, triggered by the shock of their record 82-6 defeat at Challenge Cup holders Warrington, has seen them plunge from top to 10th in Super League.<\/p>\n

Powell’s men should still be far too strong for a Gateshead side who are once again bottom of the pile in Championship One, having not won a league match in 23 attempts since March 2010.<\/p>\n

That is a far cry from the days when Powell was on Tyneside, when the old Gateshead Thunder finished sixth in their one season in Super League in 1999.<\/p>\n

Powell said: “You can’t go up there with the wrong sort of attitude.<\/p>\n

“I don’t know too much about them now. But their director of rugby, Chris Hood, used to coach Northumbria University when I coached Newcastle University.<\/p>\n

“Also, Gary Sargent, who used to be involved in our under-18s, plays for them having gone to university up there. And Joe Brown is another Londoner in their squad.<\/p>\n

“Although, on paper, the quality of the players is not going to be as high as Super League, they are still going to be a decent outfit.<\/p>\n

“The challenge is to prepare the blokes as well as we can, knowing that you’ve still got to compete and do lots of the little things well.<\/p>\n

“I know the scoreline was a big one when we played London Skolars in our pre-season friendly but, for the first 25 minutes, it was a really decent hit-out and against Gateshead it will be a similar thing.<\/p>\n

“Any team that’s playing in the Challenge Cup is not going to roll over and, as rugby league players, they’ll be proud of playing for their club.<\/p>\n

“We’ve got to make sure we do things well in the first 20 minutes to nullify their threats.<\/p>\n

“Being primarily an athletics stadium, it gets windy and the crowd are quite a long way away from the pitch and it can be quite a tough place to play.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/p>\n
