Zanzibar \u2014 AS widely expected the Zanzibar Football Association (ZFA) top men on Saturday made a dramatic grip to their positions after the ZFA members of the general meeting elected them into office for another term.<\/p>\n

Ali Fereji Tamim (President), Haji Ameir (vice-president, Unguja) and Ali Mohamed Ali (vice-president, Pemba ) all retained their respective posts at the elections held at the Gombani Stadium in Pemba.<\/p>\n

According to Abdulghani Msoma, the chairman of the elections committee, out of the 49 delegates, Tamim got 32 yes votes against 17 No votes, Ameir received 36 yes votes and 13 rejected him, while Ali scooped 43 yes votes and only 6 rejected him.<\/p>\n

Six electorates were absent. Msoma and ZFA General Secretary Mzee Zam Ali said that “all went on well.”<\/p>\n

Similar elections were held in December, 2010, but later nullified due to irregularities including violation of the elections regulations.<\/p>\n

“The exercise was transparent and all delegates were free to comments,” Msoma said, adding that threats by undisclosed anti-general election group who tried to disrupt the process could not happen.<\/p>\n

Msoma argues that the only way for changes is through democratic procedures. He said that since elections were held as par the football association constitution, he asked fans and sports stakeholders to support the ‘New’ ZFA leadership for football development in the islands.<\/p>\n

Those who were against the elections wanted the current ZFA leadership to stay away because of what they described as failure to improve soccer in the islands for the past 20 years.<\/p>\n
