The last evidence in the trial of the two men accused of murdering advisory teacher Magda Maas in her home at Keetmanshoop three and a half years ago was heard in the High Court in Windhoek on Friday.<\/p>\n

The trial of Albertus Cloete (36) and Quinton Pieters (29) is now heading to a hearing of arguments before Judge Alfred Siboleka will be handing down his verdict in the matter.<\/p>\n

Cloete and Pieters denied guilt on charges of murder, rape and robbery with aggravating circumstances at the start of their trial on May 27 last year.<\/p>\n

They are accused of robbing, raping and murdering Maas (55), who was employed as an advisory teacher in the Ministry of Education’s regional office at Keetmanshoop, in her home on November 2 to 3 2007.<\/p>\n

Maas’s partly naked body was found lying in her house on the morning of November 3 2007. She had died due to head injuries, and had also been strangled.<\/p>\n

Cloete and Pieters both testified in their own defence last week. They denied having played any role in Maas’s death. They also claimed that goods allegedly stolen from Maas’s house and which were found in their possession when they were arrested on November 3 2007, landed in their hands through another robbery.<\/p>\n

Cloete told the court he robbed a group of “young guys” in front of an acquaintance’s house at Keetmanshoop on the morning of November 3 2007. Pieters claimed he arrived at the acquaintance’s house after that robbery, and was then asked to help sell the goods stolen in that robbery.<\/p>\n

The stolen goods found with Cloete and Pieters included a suitcase, a hi-fi system, Maas’s cellphone and her prescription glasses – which Cloete was wearing when the Police nabbed him, the court has been told.<\/p>\n

The Police later also recovered Maas’s sewing machine from a woman who had bought it from Pieters, the court heard during the trial.<\/p>\n

The Police officer in charge of the investigation of the case, Detective Warrant Officer Theodore Kotungondo, told the court in his testimony that after Cloete and Pieters had been arrested and taken to the Keetmanshoop Police Station, Pieters asked him: “Is that white lady really dead?”<\/p>\n

Kotungondo said he thought this question was peculiar, because at that stage he had not told the two men that they were suspects in a case where a white woman had been murdered. He said he had only told them that they were suspects in a murder case that was being investigated.<\/p>\n

In his testimony on Friday, Pieters denied having made such a remark to Kotungondo.<\/p>\n

He also denied having made remarks that his sister had testified about earlier in the trial.<\/p>\n

She told the court that Pieters called her during the morning of November 3 2007 – before his arrest – and told her that a white woman had been killed at Keetmanshoop and that he was being suspected.<\/p>\n

He did not say such a thing to his sister, Pieters said in his testimony.<\/p>\n

Three phone calls that Pieters made to his sister that morning were made from Maas’s stolen cellphone, the court has also heard.<\/p>\n

Pieters also denied that he was wearing the shoes that the Police claim to have found him with at the time of his arrest. Shoe tracks found at Maas’s house matched the prints made by those shoes, the court has been told.<\/p>\n

With both the State and the defence cases in the trial now closed, the case is set to return to court on June 16 to determine a date for the hearing of arguments before Judge Siboleka delivers his judgement.<\/p>\n

Cloete and Pieters, who both remain in custody, are being represented by defence lawyer Monty Karuaihe. State advocate Innocentia Nyoni is prosecuting.<\/p>\n
