News of former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings picking nomination forms yesterday to contest President Mills for the NDC 2012 flagbeareship position sent many people in Kumasi, the Ashanti regional capital, into euphoria.<\/p>\n
Several excited people, most of who are said to be staunch NDC faithful, were sighted in blissful moods over the President of 31st December Women Movement\u2019s decision to contest for the NDC presidential slot.<\/p>\n
Many residents of the Garden City, Daily Guide gathered, had over the past months expressed doubts as to whether Nana Konadu\u2019s presidential ambitions were authentic. Most of the people, especially those affiliated to the opposition NPP, thought Nana Konadu\u2019s supposed presidential plans was a ploy by the ruling party to \u2018fool\u2019 the NPP.<\/p>\n
Therefore when news broke on Tuesday that Nana Konadu had indeed picked nomination forms to contest the president, there was instant jubilation to welcome the news.<\/p>\n
Ironically, the jubilant people included both NDC and NPP supporters who said they could not wait to see a first female president of the country since independence in 1957. The NDC supporters particularly expressed doubts about President Mills\u2019 ability of ensuring his campaign mantra of \u2018Better Ghana Agenda\u2019 due to his seeming \u2018go slow\u2019 attitude.<\/p>\n
They unanimously put the blame of the current hard living conditions in the country at the doorstep of President Mills who they said seemed not to have answers to Ghana\u2019s problems.<\/p>\n
The NDC supporters feared that if President Mills was not replaced with an effective leader like Nana Konadu, the NDC might lose the next general elections. One leading member of the party who demanded anonymity warned those pressurizing Nana Konadu to rescind her decision to shut up, noting that such people did not wish the party well.<\/p>\n
He said the NDC was gradually losing its grip on political power even before the country went to polls in 2012, pointing out that this was because President Mills had failed to deliver.<\/p>\n
The NDC guru said the party would not have any campaign message with President Mills as their flagbearer, asking, \u201cWhat can Mills tell the Ghanaian voter in 2012 after failing woefully?\u201d<\/p>\n
The NPP fans that were seen in jubilant moods said they had firm belief in Nana Konadu as the nation\u2019s president as compared with President Mills.<\/p>\n
They also argued that President Mills had plunged the country into difficulties due to his ineffective plans and policies as president, therefore he should be shown the exit door. Maame Afia Serwah, a banker and staunch supporter of NPP, said it was time that the entire country empowered women with political ambitions like Nana Konadu.<\/p>\n
She noted that men had taken center stage of the country\u2019s politics for far too long and relegated women to the background, a development she thought was not helping the country\u2019s democratic dispensation.<\/p>\n
Maame Serwah predicted a landslide victory for Nana Konadu in the upcoming NDC delegates congress slated for Sunyani in July, 2011.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
