Maputo \u2014 Mozambican President Armando Guebuza on Tuesday swore into office the new vice-chancellor and deputy vice-chancellor of the University Eduardo Mondlane (UEM), Orlando Quilambo and Ana Maria da Graca Monjane respectively.<\/p>\n

Speaking during the ceremony, President Guebuza stressed the need for the continuous expansion of the university into other parts of the country, bringing higher education closer to the people, which in turn will help improve their quality of life.<\/p>\n

According to President Guebuza, the expansion of higher education at UEM should proceed in response to a number of factors, with particular emphasis on the democratisation of access to education which started in 1962 and has been boosted since Mozambique became independent in 1975.<\/p>\n

“We can also highlight the advent of the era of the knowledge society – the so-called new economy and the significant expansion of the school network in primary, secondary and mid-level education”, said the President.<\/p>\n

The President stressed the growing awareness by citizens of the importance of higher education for the social and economic development of families and the entire country.<\/p>\n

President Guebuza argued that the issue of quality should be central for the new Rector of the UEM, which is the largest and oldest institution of higher education in Mozambique, with over 26,000 students.<\/p>\n

President Guebuza said that attention should be paid to the quality of education offered to students, the quality of the lecturers teaching at the university and the conditions under which such education is offered.<\/p>\n

He also stressed the need for research to be expanded and for its results to be relevant to the implementation of the university and government’s joint agenda on the fight against poverty.<\/p>\n

The debate on the issue of quality should, according to President Guebuza, allow for the regular, objective and impartial assessment of issues such as the employability of new graduates, i.e., their potential for rapid adaptation to the needs of employers.<\/p>\n

“The entrepreneurial nature of the graduates means that they should not just look for jobs, but they should also be able to create their own job opportunities as well as jobs for other citizens”, stressed the President.<\/p>\n

President Guebuza also urged the new leadership to continue to promote dialogue and encourage the participation by all, including teachers, researchers, students and workers, in identifying and overcoming obstacles hindering the university’s growth.<\/p>\n

The new vice-chancellor said that the expansion of higher education in the country tops the list of his priorities in order to further increase the number of Mozambicans with a university degree.<\/p>\n

“We have to look at what are the current challenges facing higher education and one of them is the issue of access, as there are still many Mozambicans without access to higher education”, said Quilambo.<\/p>\n
