NEW ORLEANS (AP)\u2014Drew Brees<\/a>(notes)<\/a><\/span> says he has been in touch with Reggie Bush<\/a>(notes)<\/a><\/span> and hopes the running back will see that he can still play a key role with the Saints even though the club made a trade to acquire Alabama running back Mark Ingram<\/a>(notes)<\/a><\/span> in the first round of last week\u2019s NFL draft.<\/p>\n

Brees said he saw a Twitter post in which Bush wrote, \u201cIt\u2019s been fun New Orleans,\u201d shortly after Ingram was drafted.<\/p>\n

Brees said he texted words of encouragement to Bush soon after.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think that\u2019s just frustration a little bit, just because they draft a guy at your position,\u201d Brees said. \u201cBut I think the message that was sent to him was, \u2018By no means look at that as \u2026 you\u2019re getting shown the door, that we don\u2019t want you,\u2019 or anything like that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brees spoke Tuesday before one of a series of workouts he\u2019s organized at Tulane with Saints teammates, who are prevented from using team facilities or having contact with coaches during the NFL lockout.<\/p>\n

Bush was not among the nearly 40 Saints who showed up.<\/p>\n

Brees said he saw a parallel between the drafting of Ingram and the Saints\u2019 decision to draft Bush in 2006, when running back Deuce McAllister<\/a>(notes)<\/a><\/span> was one of the club\u2019s featured players.<\/p>\n

\u201cDeuce handled that situation better than anybody ever could have and he had one of his best seasons in 2006,\u201d Brees said. \u201cHe was a huge part of our success. I think Reggie has that same potential to be that big a part of our success this year despite the fact that we\u2019ve got three other guys.\u201d<\/p>\n

Before the lockout, the Saints signed Pierre Thomas<\/a>(notes)<\/a><\/span> to a four-year contract. Chris Ivory, who led the Saints in rushing as a rookie last season, also will be back.<\/p>\n

Brees, who was in San Diego when the Chargers made a trade to draft quarterback Philip Rivers<\/a>(notes)<\/a>,<\/span> said he was sympathetic to Bush\u2019s initial reaction.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s a young guy, he\u2019s very prideful and wants to be great. He wants as many opportunities as he can get,\u201d Brees said. \u201cI think you immediately see (drafting of Ingram) as, \u2018Oh, well, that\u2019s taking opportunities away from me.\u2019 But in reality, I think you\u2019ve got to find the positive in it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brees said more depth at running back will reduce the need for the Saints to have Bush carry the ball on traditional, bruising rushes into the line and allow him to focus more on his strengths, such as his elusiveness in the open field and his ability to play receiver.<\/p>\n

As for the decision to draft Ingram, Brees added, \u201cI think it\u2019s great.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe adds an awesome element to an already impressive backfield that we have,\u201d Brees continued. \u201cWhen you have three physical backs like you\u2019re talking about with Pierre and Ivory and Mark Ingram, you need that many guys to be able to pound the ball. And then you throw in Reggie, (who has the) ability to be split out and catch the ball and run the ball in any situation, that\u2019s four guys that are pretty lethal.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/p>\n
