The PGA TOUR unveiled a new putting statistic this week\u2014\u201cStrokes Gained-Putting.\u201d PGATOUR.com\u2019s Alex Turnbull offered a great definition in this comprehensive feature<\/a>: \u201cThe TOUR has calculated the average number of putts taken to get the ball in the hole for every putt distance in one-inch increments. This calculation has been termed baseline or \u2018expected putts.\u2019 For every putt a player takes in a round, his actual number of putts is subtracted from the expected putts. With \u2018expected putts\u2019 as the foundation, the TOUR can now calculate the probability of a one, two or three-putt from any distance.\u201d<\/p>\n

While I\u2019ll be taking some time to dive into the new stat, a few basic elements jump out as I consider the fantasy impact:<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u2022 The stat has replaced putting average (or putts per greens in regulation). The old stat is the putting split on which I\u2019ve leaned for years.<\/p>\n

\u2022 The all-around ranking now includes strokes gained-putting instead of putting average.<\/p>\n

\u2022 At first blush, there seems to be natural synergies with Scrambling Average Distance to Hole<\/a> and Bogey Avoidance<\/a>, at least as it relates to long-term consistency and success.<\/p>\n

11. Webb Simpson<\/a><\/strong> \u2026 Victim of the unfortunate ruling at the 15th hole at TPC Louisiana on Sunday, you can\u2019t ignore the season he\u2019s had, with a pair of runners-up and seven top 25s overall in 10 starts. He\u2019s 0-for-2 at Quail Hollow, but he\u2019s playing at a different level this year. Currently second on TOUR in the all-around, 18th in scrambling and eighth in bogey avoidance.<\/p>\n

12. Geoff Ogilvy<\/a><\/strong> \u2026 Given his reputation as a good hard-course grinder, it\u2019s no surprise that he\u2019s 7-for-7 at Quail Hollow with five top 25s. He\u2019s coming off a T23 in San Antonio (where he was a co-leader after 36 holes), which chased a share of fourth at the Masters. Sits ninth on TOUR in scrambling and T40 in bogey avoidance.<\/p>\n

13. Paul Casey<\/a><\/strong> \u2026 Hasn\u2019t logged enough rounds in 2011 to qualify officially for stat rankings, but would sit fourth in greens and 10th in scrambling otherwise. In his last 17 starts worldwide, he\u2019s posted 14 top 25s. Always a threat every time he sticks his peg into the turf.<\/p>\n

14. Gary Woodland<\/a><\/strong> \u2026 First start since finishing T24 at his first Masters. Truly impressive splits 10 starts into his season: 23rd in total driving, ninth in greens hit, eighth in adjusted scoring average, sixth in the all-around, T49 in bogey avoidance. If there\u2019s a weakness, it\u2019s his relative inexperience at Quail Hollow, where he finished 73rd in his only appearance in 2009.<\/p>\n
